Coaching your son/daughter through Year 11

An effective parent coach Doesn’t tell their child WHAT to do or HOW to do it, rather listens and asks the right questions to move them forward Recognises their child’s strengths and builds upon these Helps their child recognise the barriers to their success Guides and supports their child through their difficulties Helps their child find the right solution for them Encourages their child to ask for support from the right people Notices and rewards small step success

Why coach not tell? It is their life! Their results! The most important skill you can help them develop is their ability to face and manage things themselves and take ownership Time to grow up and take responsibility – you are the bridge to a successful adult life

Where is your child now? 135 school days until study leave Term 1 reports – what now?

‘I don’t know why I got a minus!’ What are they saying? ‘I don’t know why I got a minus!’ And you say…. What do you have to do to find out? How can I support you? Would a meeting with your teacher help?

‘I haven’t got any homework!’ What are they saying? ‘I haven’t got any homework!’ And you say…. What do you have to do to find out? How can I support you? Would a meeting with your teacher help?

‘There aren’t any after school sessions at the moment’ What are they saying? ‘There aren’t any after school sessions at the moment’ And you say…. What do you have to do to find out? How can I support you? Would a meeting with your teacher help?

‘I don’t know what I should revise!’ What are they saying? ‘I don’t know what I should revise!’ And you say…. What do you have to do to find out? How can I support you? Would a meeting with your teacher help?

‘I don’t know what to do to get to the next grade’ What are they saying? ‘I don’t know what to do to get to the next grade’ And you say…. What do you have to do to find out? How can I support you? Would a meeting with your teacher help?

How organised are they with coursework and Projects? Resistant Materials/Art /ICT You ask…. Which tasks are outstanding? When are you planning to do it? How can I help you make this feel less overwhelming – let’s break it down

Have they got a place to revise at home? How prepared are they? Have they got a place to revise at home? Warm Quiet Place to put files Well lit No distractions OLC open every night until 4.30pm After school revision sessions

1.5 hours per subject per week = 17 hours a week How prepared are they? Is there a revision plan Do you have an agreed amount of hours of revision per week 1.5 hours per subject per week = 17 hours a week

Have they got revision notes/study cards for each subject? How prepared are they? Have they got revision notes/study cards for each subject? Book notes not enough! What resources have your teachers recommended? How can I help you to get them?

How will you know they are in the right place? They know what they need to improve specifically in each subject (not maths: solving equations. Not PE: muscle groups…) They know what they are doing to improve You can see them doing it They look you in the eye when explaining They are calm and confident They answer in the first person and take responsibility i.e. I need to, I will

What else? You are their coach You are their biggest fan/resource and the one that knows them the best for the good and for the bad Don’t accept excuses! Help them feel strong enough to overcome challenges and step it up – whatever their level!

Effective Partnership with your Child Build on their strengths Reward and encourage hard work and EFFORT! Don’t allow any obstacle to stand in their way Don’t accept excuses: my teacher didn’t say, doesn’t help, the class is noisy, no-one has told me… If you aren’t sure and need clarification: form tutor/subject teacher
