Let’s Look At John 19 John 19:1-6 1 Then Pilate therefore took Jesus, and scourged him. 2 And the soldiers platted a crown of thorns, and put it on his head, and they put on him a purple robe, 3 And said, Hail, King of the Jews! and they smote him with their hands.

Let’s Look At John 19 John 19:1-6 4 Pilate therefore went forth again, and saith unto them, Behold, I bring him forth to you, that ye may know that I find no fault in him. 5 Then came Jesus forth, wearing the crown of thorns, and the purple robe. And Pilate saith unto them, Behold the man!

Let’s Look At John 19 John 19:1-6 6 When the chief priests therefore and officers saw him, they cried out, saying, Crucify him, crucify him. Pilate saith unto them, Take ye him, and crucify him: for I find no fault in him.

John 19:15-19 15 But they cried out, Away with him, away with him, crucify him. Pilate saith unto them, Shall I crucify your King? The chief priests answered, We have no king but Caesar. 16 Then delivered he him therefore unto them to be crucified. And they took Jesus, and led him away.

John 19:15-19 17 And he bearing his cross went forth into a place called the place of a skull, which is called in the Hebrew Golgotha: 18 Where they crucified him, and two other with him, on either side one, and Jesus in the midst. 19 And Pilate wrote a title, and put it on the cross. And the writing was JESUS OF NAZARETH THE KING OF THE JEWS.

John 19:21-26 21 Then said the chief priests of the Jews to Pilate, Write not, The King of the Jews; but that he said, I am King of the Jews. 22 Pilate answered, What I have written I have written.

John 19:21-26 23 Then the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took his garments, and made four parts, to every soldier a part; and also his coat: now the coat was without seam, woven from the top throughout.

John 19:21-26 24 They said therefore among themselves, Let us not rend it, but cast lots for it, whose it shall be: that the scripture might be fulfilled, which saith, They parted my raiment among them, and for my vesture they did cast lots. These things therefore the soldiers did.

John 19:21-26 25 Now there stood by the cross of Jesus his mother, and his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Cleophas, and Mary Magdalene. 26 When Jesus therefore saw his mother, and the disciple standing by, whom he loved, he saith unto his mother, Woman, behold thy son!

John 19:28-37 28 After this, Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the scripture might be fulfilled, saith, I thirst. 29 Now there was set a vessel full of vinegar: and they filled a spunge with vinegar, and put it upon hyssop, and put it to his mouth.

John 19:28-37 30 When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost. 31 The Jews therefore, because it was the preparation, that the bodies should not remain upon the cross on the sabbath day, (for that sabbath day was an high day,) besought Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away.

John 19:28-37 32 Then came the soldiers, and brake the legs of the first, and of the other which was crucified with him. 33 But when they came to Jesus, and saw that he was dead already, they brake not his legs: 34 But one of the soldiers with a spear pierced his side, and forthwith came there out blood and water.

John 19:28-37 35 And he that saw it bare record, and his record is true: and he knoweth that he saith true, that ye might believe. 36 For these things were done, that the scripture should be fulfilled, A bone of him shall not be broken. 37 And again another scripture saith, They shall look on him whom they pierced.

Dr Alexander Metherell, MD., Ph.D. Once a person is hanging in the vertical position, the crucifixion is essentially an agonizingly slow death by asphyxiation Dr Alexander Metherell, MD., Ph.D.

Dr Alexander Metherell, MD., Ph.D. Basically, in order to exhale, the individual must push up on his feet so the tension on the muscles would be eased for a moment Dr Alexander Metherell, MD., Ph.D.

Dr Alexander Metherell, MD., Ph.D. In doing so, the nail would tear through the foot, eventually locking up against the tarsal bones Dr Alexander Metherell, MD., Ph.D.

Dr Alexander Metherell, MD., Ph.D. After managing to exhale, the person would then be able to relax down and take another breath in Dr Alexander Metherell, MD., Ph.D.

Dr Alexander Metherell, MD., Ph.D. Again he’d have to push himself up to exhale, scraping his bloodied back against the course wood of the cross Dr Alexander Metherell, MD., Ph.D.

Dr Alexander Metherell, MD., Ph.D. This would go on and on until complete exhaustion would take over, and the person wouldn’t be able to push up and breath any more Dr Alexander Metherell, MD., Ph.D.

Dr Alexander Metherell, MD., Ph.D. As he slows down his breathing, he goes into what is called Respiratory Acidosis – the carbon monoxide in the blood is dissolved as carbon acid, causing the acidity of the blood to increase Dr Alexander Metherell, MD., Ph.D.

This eventually leads to an irregular heartbeat Dr Alexander Metherell, MD., Ph.D.

Dr Alexander Metherell, MD., Ph.D. In fact, with His heart beating erratically, Jesus would have known that He was at the moment of His death, which is when He was able to say, “Lord, into Your Hands I commit My Spirit” Dr Alexander Metherell, MD., Ph.D.

He would have then died of Cardiac Arrest Dr Alexander Metherell, MD., Ph.D.

Dr Alexander Metherell, MD., Ph.D. Even before He died – and this is important too – the Hypovolemic Shock would have caused a sustained rapid heart rate that would have contributed to heart failure Dr Alexander Metherell, MD., Ph.D.

Dr Alexander Metherell, MD., Ph.D. As a result, a collection of fluid would form in the membrane around the heart (Pericardial Effusion), as well as around the lungs (Pleural Effusion) Dr Alexander Metherell, MD., Ph.D.

Dr Alexander Metherell, MD., Ph.D. Because of what happened when the Roman soldier came around and, being fairly certain that Jesus was dead, confirmed it by thrusting a spear into His right side Dr Alexander Metherell, MD., Ph.D.

Dr Alexander Metherell, MD., Ph.D. It was probably His right side; this is not certain, but from the description, it was probably His right side, between the ribs Dr Alexander Metherell, MD., Ph.D.

Dr Alexander Metherell, MD., Ph.D. The spear apparently went through the right lung and into the heart, so when the spear was pulled out, some fluid – the Pericardial and Pleural Effusions – came out Dr Alexander Metherell, MD., Ph.D.

Dr Alexander Metherell, MD., Ph.D. This would have the appearance of clear fluid, like water, followed by a large volume of blood, as the eyewitness John described in his Gospel Dr Alexander Metherell, MD., Ph.D.

THERE WAS ABSOLUTELY NO DOUBT THAT JESUS WAS DEAD! Dr Alexander Metherell, MD., Ph.D.

Why Was Jesus Nailed?

Because Of Our Sin!

Matthew 1:21 And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins.

John 1:29 The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.

When Adam sinned, two hellish deaths were unleashed on mankind

Romans 5:12 Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:

Man Dies Physically Man Dies Spiritually

Both deaths mean one thing… SEPARATION!

The body is separated from the soul PHYSICALLY The body is separated from the soul This is the 1st Death!

The spirit of the unsaved is separated from God, forever SPIRITUALLY The spirit of the unsaved is separated from God, forever This is the 2nd Death!

What Motivated Jesus To Be Nailed?

LOVE!

Romans 5:6-8 6 For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly. 7 For scarcely for a righteous man will one die: yet peradventure for a good man some would even dare to die. 8 But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.

COURAGE!

Luke 9:51 And it came to pass, when the time was come that he should be received up, he stedfastly set his face to go to Jerusalem,

Mark 10:32-34 32 And they were in the way going up to Jerusalem; and Jesus went before them: and they were amazed; and as they followed, they were afraid. And he took again the twelve, and began to tell them what things should happen unto him,

Mark 10:32-34 33 Saying, Behold, we go up to Jerusalem; and the Son of man shall be delivered unto the chief priests, and unto the scribes; and they shall condemn him to death, and shall deliver him to the Gentiles:

Mark 10:32-34 34 And they shall mock him, and shall scourge him, and shall spit upon him, and shall kill him: and the third day he shall rise again.

What Did Jesus Accomplish By Being Nailed?

HE RECONCILED US TO GOD!

Mark 10:45 For even the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.

2 Corinthians 5:17-18 17 Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new. 18 And all things are of God, who hath reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ, and hath given to us the ministry of reconciliation;

Galatians 4:4-7 4 But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law, 5 To redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons.

Galatians 4:4-7 6 And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father. 7 Wherefore thou art no more a servant, but a son; and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ.

HE GLORIFIED HIS FATHER!

John 10:17-18 17 Therefore doth my Father love me, because I lay down my life, that I might take it again. 18 No man taketh it from me, but I lay it down of myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. This commandment have I received of my Father.

John 17:4 I have glorified thee on the earth: I have finished the work which thou gavest me to do.

John 19:30 When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost.

How Can I Possibly Say That God Does Not Love Me, When He Allowed His One And Only Son To Be Nailed To A Cross For Me?

John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

Isaiah 53:5-6 5 But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.

Isaiah 53:5-6 6 All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.

Isaiah 53:10 Yet it pleased the LORD to bruise him; he hath put him to grief: when thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin, he shall see his seed, he shall prolong his days, and the pleasure of the LORD shall prosper in his hand.

Isaiah 53:12 Therefore will I divide him a portion with the great, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong; because he hath poured out his soul unto death: and he was numbered with the transgressors; and he bare the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors.
