Presentation transcript:

Matthew 28:1-10 After the Sabbath, at dawn on the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to look at the tomb. 2 There was a violent earthquake, for an angel of the Lord came down from heaven and, going to the tomb, rolled back the stone and sat on it.

3 His appearance was like lightning, and his clothes were white as snow. 4 The guards were so afraid of him that they shook and became like dead men. 5 The angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. 6 He is not here; he has risen, just as he said. Come and see the place where he lay.

7 Then go quickly and tell his disciples: ‘He has risen from the dead and is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see him.’ Now I have told you.” 8 So the women hurried away from the tomb, afraid yet filled with joy, and ran to tell his disciples.

9 Suddenly Jesus met them. “Greetings,” he said. They came to him, clasped his feet and worshiped him. 10 Then Jesus said to them, “Do not be afraid. Go and tell my brothers to go to Galilee; there they will see me.”

Jesus Is Alive! Matthew How do we know Jesus lives? Scripture History Other writings Our lives

Matthew 26 When Jesus had finished saying all these things, he said to his disciples, 2 “As you know, the Passover is two days away—and the Son of Man will be handed over to be crucified.”

Jesus did not run away Instead he sat with his disciples for a Passover meal He took the bread – this is my body And the cup – this is my blood

They sung a hymn And went out to the Mount of Olives Jesus prayed The disciples slept Judas came to identify Jesus

Peter promised to stand by Jesus Trial was held before the high priest Unreliable witnesses 60 …Finally two came forward 61 and declared, “This fellow said, ‘I am able to destroy the temple of God and rebuild it in three days.’ ”

63 …The high priest said to him, “I charge you under oath by the living God: Tell us if you are the Christ, the Son of God.” 64 “Yes, it is as you say,” Jesus replied. “But I say to all of you: In the future you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and coming on the clouds of heaven.”

Meanwhile Peter disowns Jesus Judas show regret at his actions Matthew 27 5 So Judas threw the money into the temple and left. Then he went away and hanged himself.

Jesus is brought before the governor: Pilate Pilate offers a way out Let’s crucify a real criminal: Barabbas The crowd follow their leaders

22 “What shall I do, then, with Jesus who is called Christ?” Pilate asked. They all answered, “Crucify him!” 23 “Why? What crime has he committed?” asked Pilate. But they shouted all the louder, “Crucify him!”

Soldiers mocked him They beat Him Forced Jesus to carry his own cross While on the cross Jesus is mocked 40 …“You who are going to destroy the temple and build it in three days, save yourself! Come down from the cross, if you are the Son of God!”

Without realizing, those who mock Jesus acknowledge he saved! 42 “He saved others,” they said, “but he can’t save himself! He’s the King of Israel! Let him come down now from the cross, and we will believe in him.

Jesus cried out in physical pain He also experienced the emotional pain of separation Jesus died Was buried in a tomb The tomb was sealed

The women went to see the place where Jesus was buried It was empty Matthew 28 5 The angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. 6 He is not here; he has risen, just as he said.

The story was not ending It was just beginning Jesus was alive!

Scripture and history records Jesus But coming back to life was a great event that happened over 200 years ago What does it matter for us today? It matters because Jesus is alive Most importantly, Jesus is alive in us!
