Staffing No business can be better than the people who run it The staffing objective is to have the right people with the right skills in the right places at the right time

Discussion Questions Define staffing and explain why staffing is vital to the long-term success of the business. Identify and describe the three parts to determining the firm’s personnel needs. Explain how they are related to the firm’s business plan. Identify what a critical task is and how it is handled in staffing an organization.

Discussion Questions Is it better for a firm to promote from within or go outside the firm when filling a job? Explain your answer. What does a firm’s hiring process tell a potential employee about the business? What are the most important pieces of information found on a job application form? What should a manager do with them? Explain your answer. What is the best procedure for conducting a performance review?

Discussion Questions Describe how a manager should deal with an employee whose performance is very good so he/she will continue to excel. Describe how a manager should deal with an employee whose performance is poor so that his/her performance will be great in the future. When should a poor performing employee be fired? How do you fire a poorly performing employee?

Discussion Questions To keep good employees all you have to do is pay them enough. Do you agree or disagree? Explain your answer. Is it the employer’s or employee’s responsibility to keep their job skills up to date? Explain your answer. Explain why staffing is included as part of the directing business function.
