Physics Skills AS Physics Lesson 1

Physics Workshop Every Wednesday 3.40pm-4.40pm in O8 Every Wednesday 3.40pm-4.40pm in O8 Is this time good for most people? Is this time good for most people?

Todays Objectives To be able to:- Practice using a Calculator (Order of Operations, BODMAS). Practice using a Calculator (Order of Operations, BODMAS). Use an appropriate number of Significant Figures Use an appropriate number of Significant Figures Re-arrange equations. Re-arrange equations. Use prefixes & converting between unit magnitudes. Use prefixes & converting between unit magnitudes.

Quick Question Evaluate:- using your calculator.

Order of Operations B - Brackets first O - Orders (ie Powers and Square Roots, etc.) DM - Division and Multiplication (left-to-right) AS - Addition and Subtraction (left-to-right) 30 ÷ 5 × 3 =6 × 3= 18 Left to Right is the conventional order and is what your calculator does. 30 ÷ 5 × 3 =30 ÷ 15= 2 For this to be the case brackets would have to go around the (5 × 3) Note that the fact that the 5 and 3 are put on the bottom on the previous slide implies they should be multiplied first.

Calculator Practice (7.5 x 103) x (24) = (6.2 x 10-5) x (5.0 x 10-3) = (1.4 x 105) x (2.0 x 104) = 4.5 x 103 / 7.0 x 104 = 4.3 x 10-6 / 6.0 x 103 = Exercise B In each case, find the value of y. y = (7.5 x 103)2 2. y = (1.3 x 103) x (1.6 x 10-4) (6.6 x 106) + (3.27 x 10-3) 3. y = (5.6 x 10-4)2 x (7.8 x 108) (6.6 x 10-11) x (9.1 x 10-2)2 4. y = (4.12 x 103) + (6.5 x 102) (2.3 x 104) x (8.1 x 102)

Significant Figures 1. All non-zero digits are significant. 2. In a number without a decimal point, only zeros BETWEEN non-zero digits are significant. E.g. sig in but not in In a number with a decimal point, all zeros to the right of the right-most non-zero digit are significant s.f.

Use a Reasonable Number of S.F. Try to use the same s.f. as those provided in the question or just one more. Example: A man runs 110 metres in 13 seconds, calculate its average speed. Speed = Distance/Time = 110 metres / 13 seconds = m/s =8.46 m/s seems acceptable. If in doubt use 3 s.f. – cant be too far wrong.

Rearranging Practice a = bc a = b/c a = b – c a = b + c a = bc + d a = b/c – d a = bc/d a = (b + c)/d a = b/c + d/e b=? b=?, c=? c=? b=? c=? d=?. b=? c=? e=?

Converting between Unit Magnitudes How many seconds are there in an hour? How many m are there in a km? Convert 33km/hr into m/s: Hint: Can you go further in an hour or a second? What is 1 mm 3 in m 3 ? Hint: try drawing a 1mm 3 and converting its sides first What is 24cm 3 in m 3 ?
