Ay Mon, Its Jamaica Mon By: Symone Trout, Ayanna Egbarin, and Lindsay Tolosa

How, When, and Why Jamaicans Came to America? Jamaicans came to America to work in tobacco fields during the Civil War while everyone was in the South fighting the war. They wanted to get away from the bad situations (economic, crime) in Jamaica. Jamaicans had a better chance in America than in Jamaica to succeed.

How Did Americans Treat These New Immigrants? Jamaicans faced prejudice and discrimination, due to their race. They started to group together in areas of other Jamaicans so cultures wouldnt clash. When we interviewed Mrs. Santi, our teacher, she told us about how when she worked in certain jobs, she would be discriminated against due to her accent. They would tell her to go back to where she came from.

How Did Jamaica Gain Its Independence? Jamaica gained its independence in In 1938 there was a rebellion when the working class caused a national strike. The strike was against the West Indian Sugar Company because it failed to keep promises of the better working conditions.

Where Can You Find Jamaicans? Jamaicans mostly immigrated to the United States, the UK, and Canada. They also immigrated to huge cities like New York City, LA, Hartford, Toronto, London, etc.

Culture Music – Music is an important part of the culture of Jamaica. The most well-known music that comes from Jamaica is Reggae. Also, Dancehall, Ska, and Dub music are very popular. Food – Food in Jamaican contains many flavors, spices, and influences from all the people that came there from different countries. Religion – 65% of Jamaicans are Christians. The rest are Protestant because of the Christian leadership in the British Anti-Slavery Act. Also, they have something called the Rastafarian movement.
