The Mapua Clean-up Presented by: Juhel Jeremy & Waleed Al Harmali

Brief Background  Location : in New Zealand near Nelson  Former Owner : Fruitgrowers Chemical Co. (FCC)  Funding: Ministry of Environment & (TDC)

Quick History  1930 : FCC founded  1940s: producing organochlorine pesticides: DDT, DDD and dieldrin  1970: making 84 different types of pesticides and fungicides, using 124 chemicals  1988: FCC closed => site “ orphaned”  1996 : TDC acquired the land from the former owners  2001: working EDL & its MCD technology

The Problem  nature of the soil is a mix of clay, silt and gravel  4 hectares & 50,000 m 3 contaminated soil  spills & some waste being buried on site:  50% of soil is 10 times & other 50% 1,000 times  800m 3 of marine sediments exceed up to 50 times  5 parts per million of DDT and 3 parts per million of dieldrin  up to 5,000 ppm DDX and 200 ppm dieldrin hotspot

Aim & Benefits  prototype clean-up for New Zealand  restore a clean landscape, 40% public space  Commercial and groundwater protection = 200ppm DDX; 60ppm dieldrin + aldrin  Residential and surface water protection = 5 ppm DDX ;3 ppm dieldrin + aldrin

Short Break

The Concerned Solutions 3 companies out of 26 with different technologies: 1.MCD, or ballmillling process by EDL 2.Xenorem bioremediation composting by Environmental Remediation 3.Daramend bioremediation composting by Waste Management

Alternative Solutions 2.Best result: using NZ poultry manure and woodchips (12 weeks)  DDX was reduced from 682 ppm to 54 ppm  dieldrin from 122 ppm to 12 ppm 3.Best result: (147 days)  DDX: from 1060 ppm to 34.6  Dieldrin & Aldrin: from 59 ppm to 11.5 ppm  “Commercial” slandered achieved BUT “residential” land use standard NOT

Comparison

The Final Solution  MCD, or ballmillling process by EDL Focused on the destruction of DDT and dieldrin  The plant was built during 2004  Proof of performance trial in August 2004 Amount of contaminant destruction Environmental emissions (air discharges, noise, vibrations)  Full scale remedial works began in November 2004

The Process  Unique ball mill technology  3 main components : soil drier, air quality control equipment and a MCD reactor

Science  The MCD reactor is the key feature of the plant designed to optimize the destruction of organic contaminants using mechanochemistry  What is the mechanochemistry? Chemical and physico chemical changes of solids due to the influence of mechanical energy

Site Progress

 Excavation of the soil Ground water has been pumped Different piles of soil Tested and validated against the soil acceptance criteria Reinstated back into the clean holes  Soil treatment Soil estimated to require treatement Contaminants destroyed to a certain level

Some Pictures

Results  Better than expected Residential level is achieved (5 ppm DDX ;3 ppm dieldrin + aldrin) Clean landscape  Final solution « Environmentally friendly » Ball milling is a highly interesting technology Successful project

Any Questions? It’s over
