NÚCLEO Pensamento & Ação Coaching and Conviviality Otherness What is Otherness? It is the capability of recognizing the other as a legitimate other, in his completeness, his dignity, his rights, and above all, his differences.

NÚCLEO Pensamento & Ação Coaching and Conviviality Otherness The existence of the “individual I” is only allowed by contact with the “other” Or, as Gregory Bateson put it, “It takes two to know one”.

NÚCLEO Pensamento & Ação Coaching and Conviviality Where and When? Rio de Janeiro, 2002

NÚCLEO Pensamento & Ação Coaching and Conviviality For Whom?

NÚCLEO Pensamento & Ação Coaching and Conviviality Cultural Creatives

NÚCLEO Pensamento & Ação Coaching and Conviviality The relationship of “I” with “Other” (people, society, nature, the market place, our planet) can take on different forms depending on the perspective of “I”. “Other” “I”

NÚCLEO Pensamento & Ação Coaching and Conviviality “I” the agent and the “other” as the object. There is a separation of the “I” that stands before the “other”. This can be healthy. Land based tribe – tree as a canoe or wood for the fire, White Elk as the warrior Sunset as beautiful sight – “Look at that beautiful sunset.”

NÚCLEO Pensamento & Ação Coaching and Conviviality And there is also a oneness: in seeing the other, we can see ourselves. If not, we stop being human beings and start becoming just strategy machines for the use and the consumption of others.

NÚCLEO Pensamento & Ação Coaching and Conviviality The relationship of “I”-“other” is a duality, separation and wholeness alternate all the time. Conviviality is exactly that – a healthy alternation.

NÚCLEO Pensamento & Ação Coaching and Conviviality In a convival relationship, the Other is seen as an equal, stablishing a sense of respect, openess and caring. Conviviality is becoming present to the other – in all meanings that this word allows.

NÚCLEO Pensamento & Ação Coaching and Conviviality However, there is a risk of forgetting little by little that we belong to the whole. Without balance from wholeness, separation degrades to utilitarism. In an utilitarian relationship, the I subordinates the Other to his interests and personal goals. The other is reduced to an object, an instrument; control prevails.

NÚCLEO Pensamento & Ação Coaching and Conviviality “Instrumentalization”

NÚCLEO Pensamento & Ação Coaching and Conviviality The other as a legitimate other

NÚCLEO Pensamento & Ação Coaching and Conviviality Conviviality is an attitude Not allowing the other to be reduced to an object or instrument to fulfill self interests Being present for the other Of recognizing oneself in the other So that through indentification comes respect, openess and care
