From Pumpkin to Jack-O-Lantern October 31

Pumpkin Vines Pumpkins are large vegetables that grow on vines. (Since they develop from flower blossoms, they are really fruits, but we call them vegetables.)

Pumpkin Bud Pumpkin vines have large buds that turn into flowers.

Pumpkin Blossom This yellow blossom will turn into a pumpkin soon after it opens.

Pumpkin Field When pumpkins are ripe, they turn orange and their stems wither and die.

Pick-Up Truck After they ripen, they are put on trucks and taken to pumpkin patches.

Pumpkin Patch A pumpkin patch is a place with a lot of pumpkins for sale. The pumpkins are usually kept on the ground.

Buying a Pumpkin Parents and their children visit pumpkin patches to buy pumpkins for Halloween.

Gigantic Pumpkin This pumpkin is gigantic. Gigantic means very, very large.

Removing Pulp and Seeds To make a jack-o- lantern you need to cut off the top. Then you need to take out the seeds and the pulp.

Pumpkin Pulp and Seeds The inside of a pumpkin has pulp and seeds.

Carving the Face After you remove the seeds and pulp, you carve a face on the pumpkin. You can draw the face with a pencil.

Roasted Seeds Roasted pumpkin seeds taste delicious. This is a mixture of pumpkin seeds, sesame seeds, and sunflower seeds.

Jack-O-Lanterns Many people put their jack-o- lanterns outside to greet trick-or- treaters.
