THE CONVENTION The Convention on the Rights of People with Disabilities is an international treaty, but the main responsibility for its implementation lies with national governments. Implementation of human rights is essentially a domestic issue. The CRPD reflects this principle by giving guidelines to States Parties on domestic implementation.

CIVIL SOCIETY ROLE Nearly 80 percent of Treaty content originated from from civil society. Civil Society Role in Implementation and Inclusion: Article 4 - General Obligations Article 33 - National Implementation and Monitoring Article 34 - Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities

PRINCIPLES Respect for inherent dignity and individual autonomy Nondiscrimination Full and effective participation and inclusion in society Respect for difference and acceptance of persons with disabilities as part of human diversity and humanity; Equality of opportunity; Accessibility; Equality between men and women; Respect for the evolving capacities of children with disabilities and respect for the right of children with disabilities to preserve their identities.
