B.S.I. British Standards Institute

BSI Exam Question Describe the work of the BSI (British Standards Institute) and explain its importance to the consumer. (6 Marks)

BSI Exam Answer The BSI is a professional body of experts (1). They check (2) everything that might be considered dangerous to the consumer (3). E.g. that an electrical product is produced in such a way that risk of being electrocuted is reduced to a minimum (4). They will give it a Kitemark (5) if it passes their tests. This is important to the consumer because they know the product is safe and they can be assured of its quality (6)

CE Mark The CE marking certifies that a product has met EU consumer safety, health or environmental requirements. Similar to BSI but for the EU (European Union)
