© Joshua D. Margolis 2010 Conditions That Followers Experience: Not Just a Once-A-Century Tsunami Those we are leading often experience... Uncertainty Being torn Destabilizing events Too little and too much information Unresponsive third parties In response, leaders are tempted to step in: Sometimes intervening is necessary But sometimes it is essential to step back Need to develop multiple capabilities, to: Do both – intervene and step back Discern when each is called for Conditions that simultaneously require and inhibit composure and resourcefulness

© Joshua D. Margolis 2010 Leading Others to Deliver on Responsibility Calibrating Level of Intervention 1. Too light a touch  diffusion of responsibility  No one feels committed to taking on the responsibility 2. Too heavy a hand  deflection of responsibility  People limit the potential contribution they could otherwise make to help meet responsibility The aim is to create an experience of you (the leader) and to generate in them an experience of themselves that enables them to deliver.

© Joshua D. Margolis 2010 Leading Others to Deliver on Responsibility Three Orienting Questions What do I need (what will comfort me)? What does the situation call for? What does my team need from me so they can meet the demands of the situation?
