Based on conversations/feedback from staff and students, we try to understand career challenges faced by different groups across the Faculty, and address them through policy changes, new initiatives and culture change. We work within the frameworks of a number of accreditation schemes, including Athena SWAN (signed up 2009) and the Race Equality charters (signing up to this academic year), the Stonewall Global Diversity Champion Programme (signed up 2016) and the Business Disability Forum (signed up 2017) The Faculty holds 5 Silver and 4 Bronze Athena SWAN awards, which are national awards that recognise the work going on in universities towards achieving gender equality. The Faculty is now preparing an application for the entire Faculty, which includes not only academic and research staff and students, but all our professional staff too. The Student Charter has been developed to provide a statement of Student Academic Rights and responsibilities alongside Behavioural Expectations The University requires students to conduct themselves in a reasonable manner at all times, both on and off Campus. These values are essential to the functioning of an academic community and the University will take appropriate action where a proven breach of its policies/ regulations relating to student conduct has occurred Any misconduct will be investigated via the Student Disciplinary Procedure Student Charter: Style sheet – extra type features 6

7 Creating a safe and inclusive environment
In 2016 Universities UK produced a ‘Changing the Culture’ report, which all UK Universities were asked to consider and respond to. Newcastle University takes all reports of violence, misconduct and discrimination seriously, and are committed to thorough investigations, prevention of misconduct and support for those involved. Bystander Intervention: - We endorse the principle that both staff and students have a collective responsibility to ensure we are all working/studying in a positive environment. We encourage individuals to be active bystanders and intervene to prevent problematic situations. Intervention may involve speaking out in the face of discrimination, reporting an incident, or diffusing a situation using distraction techniques. Link to video: Reporting: You can report an incident involving yourself or a third party. You may make an appointment with one of our counsellors, and the survivor/ victim retains control of the process. Security: on-duty 24 hours per day, 365 days of the year or via Universities UK is a representative body which strives to be a voice for all UK universities, on recommendations about policies and procedures. The report asked UK universities to implement various policies and procedures for preventing and responding to any violence, discrimination or bullying on university campuses. As a result of this, Newcastle University has been reviewing its procedures this past year and is implementing new mechanisms for ensuring the safety of its students and for supporting students and staff. These procedures include systems for preventing incidents, for instance through awareness training and campaigns, and for responding, through having effective reporting and support mechanisms. 7

8 For Yourself – allowing yourself the best chance of success.
