Barrington Middle School Athletics Program Informational Forum Hosted by: Cathy Berei Wednesday, June 1, 2011

Welcome Thank You Introductions

Program Goals and Philosophy  An inclusive department that offers a wide variety of interscholastic and intramural athletic programs  Athletics are an integral part of the middle school experience and help develop young men and women into becoming positive, contributing members to the community of Barrington and society  It is our overall goal to prepare every student-athlete for participation, competition and success at the next level

Program Goals and Philosophy  Athletics can:  Enhance academic success  Offer opportunities to develop athletic ability  Build self-confidence  Build self-discipline and organizational skills  Build character and compassion  Develop citizenship, ethics and values  Foster good sportsmanship, fair play and honesty  Help to learn how to deal with adversity  Teach one how to be a humble loser and a gracious winner

Program Goals and Philosophy  We believe children develop differently and at different paces, therefore, we want to provide opportunities:  For students in all grades 5 through 8, emphasizing total school involvement and participation  For students of all physical, mental and social ability levels  That challenge each individual student-athlete at the appropriate physical, mental and social levels

Program Goals and Philosophy  Each individual interscholastic and instructional intramural program will teach student-athletes to:  Perform using proper technique, strategies and tactics of the sport  Learn the game rules and fair game play  Develop as athletes specific to their sport  Set appropriate short- and long-term goals  Work cooperatively, positively and how to be a good team member / what it means to be a part of a team

Best Places to Find Information  Webpage (linked from BMS Homepage)  Barrington Middle School Barrington Middle School  Bulletin Board (outside of the BMS gym)  Ask the student-athlete  Contact the coach ( or phone) directly  Contact the Athletic Director  (for the remainder of the school year) - Cathy Berei x193

The Details…  Unless prior arrangements have been made by the coach to supervise…when student-athletes have practices that do not start right after school (2:15-2:20), they must go home and then return to school at the appropriate time  Students are not allowed to be in the school after school hours unsupervised by an adult
