YOU DROPPED A BOMB ON ME Ending the war with Japan through the use of Atomic Energy

WHEN, WHERE, AND HOW WAS THE BOMB MADE? Secret scientific experiment called the Manhattan Project Scientists experiment with Uranium and Plutonium Splitting an atom of either of these elements would unleash explosive power never seen before In addition to explosive power, deadly radiation is left behind On July 15, 1945, the first successful test detonation (setting off) of an atomic bomb was conducted in the New Mexico desert Original budget was $6,000.00, project eventually topped $2 billion!

WHY DID PRESIDENT TRUMAN DECIDE TO DROP THE ATOMIC BOMBS? We had already lost thousands of troops in the Pacific Theatre Invading Japan would lead to many more deaths and injuries After President Truman was made aware of the test results of the Atomic Bomb, he knew we could end the war much quicker and suffer fewer losses

WHY HIROSHIMA? (HERO – SHE – MA) Hiroshima was a military area, and had not been at the center of much bombing activity. It was easy to measure the amount of destruction done to a fairly untouched area. Hiroshima was a low lying area surrounded by mountains or hills, therefore, the blast would be magnified.

HOW MANY PEOPLE DIED FROM THE ATOMIC BOMB THAT WAS DROPPED ON HIROSHIMA ON AUGUST 6, 1945 Approximately 140,000 people died in the initial blast, most of them civilians

WHY NAGASAKI? HOW MANY PEOPLE DIED FROM THE ATOMIC BOMB THAT WAS DROPPED ON NAGASAKI ON AUGUST 9,1945? Nagasaki housed some of Japan’s naval weaponry Bad weather caused the U.S. to change the bombing plans Nagasaki was chosen it was the 11 th largest city in Japan and we could see it to bomb it! 75,000 Japanese killed, mostly civilians
