Airmanship II Airfield Communications

This lecture will help you to understand the communication systems used on an airfield, including: Radio Telephony Tele-Talk Systems Special Telephones Visual Communications

Radio Telephony Uses VHF and UHF to talk to aircraft and vehicles. These frequencies provide clear lines of communications. Each airfield and its section have their own frequencies.

Tele Talk Used for direct contact with vital sections on an airfield, including:  The ATC  Station Commander  Medical Officer  Fire Section

Special Telephone Systems There are three types, BT system- Like you have at home. The Defence Fixed Telecoms System (DFTS) - links all units and stations together. Landlines - A special Air Traffic Control System which links the tower by direct cables to important centres such as ATCCs, ATCRUs, other airfields, emergency organisations and controlling authorities.

Visual Communications Stationary Object Hazard Bad Ground Markers 0.61 Metres square >

Visual Communications Helicopter Operating Areas The ‘H’ is 4 metres high by 2 metres across It may also have a box around the ‘H’. Well clear of fixed wing aircraft
