West Yorkshire Responsible Care Cell, 19 th October 2005 Proposed REC (Resource Efficiency Club), Chemicals, West Yorkshire Janet Murfin

West Yorkshire Responsible Care Cell, 19 th October 2005 What is it? BREW funding from landfill tax for RECs – no size restrictions, unlike GBSO Upgrade of GBSO Chemicals Club run 04/05 for West Yorkshire “extreme SMEs” GBSO club saved money for members in first year, real benefit is year-on-year TT Environmental, with SORIS, have requested feasibility grant for BREW funds

West Yorkshire Responsible Care Cell, 19 th October 2005 Examples from GBSO club: Sourced waste supplier for off-site treatment/ landspreading, avoiding treatment and landfill costs Helped with waste reclassification, segregation and recycling suppliers Set up partnership for re-use of 25L plastic bottles Brought in engineer to design plant and instrumentation system for chiller to replace water cooling (including full costing) but not implemented Sourced recycling supplier for fibreboard kegs, instead of going to landfill (not implemented yet) Helped get information for company to move to bulk handling a major raw material, saving packaging, transport costs (being implemented)

West Yorkshire Responsible Care Cell, 19 th October 2005 How will it work? Model for “extreme” SMEs was mainly on-site consultancy – too busy to leave site We do the paperwork for you You know what your problem areas are – we help provide tools – ideas, suppliers, technical experts, other grant funders Would like to extend model to bring in occasional meetings, as exchange of ideas between companies is important Envirowise think around 10 members, we think wider pool of associate members too

West Yorkshire Responsible Care Cell, 19 th October 2005 Why should we join? Save money, help your business keep competitive Regulators like idea (also EPOPRA benefits?) Help others by passing on your knowledge, and pick up relevant information, gain partners There’s a large pot of YOUR money – £20 - £30k if club goes ahead Recent experience from GBSO – lots of contacts, suppliers, partners this new club will be more efficient, so more time on helping members
