Changes to the NHS April 2013 How they affect services commissioned from pharmacies

Changes to NHS April 2013 PCTs no longer exist and are replaced by NHS England Clinical Commissioning Groups Local Authority Public Health teams Budgets have been transferred from PCTs to these new organisations

NHS England Local Area Team Hold community pharmacy contract Commission Advanced services Commission Enhanced services, out of hours provision (rota), flu vaccination, emergency supply LES Monitor community pharmacies Manage performance issues

Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) Separate CCGs for Halton, St Helens and Knowsley Currently CCGs commission from pharmacies Care at the chemist Palliative care service. CCG medicines management teams (pharmacists and technicians) work in GP practices to support prescribing and are a valuable point of contact for community pharmacy colleagues – find out who your practice pharmacist is.

Public Health teams now sit within the local authority (council) Currently commission following services from pharmacy, depending on area Substance misuse Sexual health Stop smoking service Alcohol brief intervention They also commission provider services which work closely with community pharmacy providers providing public health services e.g. Addaction, Bridgewater

Local Pharmaceutical Committee (LPC). Independent and representative group for all community pharmacists and community pharmacy owners. Works locally with NHS England Area Teams, CCGs, Local Authorities and other healthcare professionals to help plan healthcare services. negotiates and discusses pharmacy services with commissioners is available to give advice to community pharmacy contractors and others wanting to know more about local pharmacy. liaise closely with the Local Medical Committee so that GPs and pharmacists can work together to deliver services to patients. LPCs also work closely with local dental committees and local optical committees.
