Lecture 1

What is grammar? SYNTAX  The arrangement of words in sentences, e.g. rules about word order. MORPHOLOGY  The internal structure of words, e.g. rules about inflections.

Course Aims Upon completion of the course, the students should be able to: use basic grammar terminology to describe English language rules and to explain similarities and differences between Swedish and English. apply these language rules in practice and produce grammatically correct English.

Assessment Assessment is based on a final written exam in two parts (theory and practice). One of the grades Distinction (VG), Pass (G), or Fail (U) is awarded in the examination of each section. In order to pass the course, students must pass each section separately. In order to be awarded an overall VG, a VG on both parts of the test is required.
