What’s all this about? How VLEs and online learning are far from dead and buried. How to plan a new way of supporting students beyond the classroom? Objectives To demonstrate how social media can be used to support learning To allow delegates to reflect on the effectiveness of their online learning To suggest simple activities (and free resources) that can be used by teachers to enhance online and ‘flipped’ learning.

“ICT is not being used well enough to support learning” The 2012 NI ETI Chief Inspector’s report

What is a workshop anyway? What do you want to take away from this session? The biggest issue in leading ANY ICT session.... What skills are YOU bringing to the table and what do YOU want to know/ learn? Key Questions

Suggested programme 1.Some comments about online learning 2.Poll number 1 (VLEs vs websites) 3.Poll number 2 (social learning) 4.Poll number 3 (additional apps)

1// SOME COMMENTS ABOUT ONLINE LEARNING

How would we see books if they were invented after video games?

In ‘The Global Achievement Gap’ Tony Wagner makes the case that schools aren’t failing. “In today’s competitive global ‘knowledge economy’, all students need new skills for college, careers and citizenship. The failure to give all students those new skills leaves todays youth – and our country – at an alarming competitive disadvantage. School’s haven’t changed: the world has. And our schools are not failing. Rather, they are obsolete – even the ones that score the best in league tables and exams. This is a very difficult problem requiring an altogether different solution.” (2008)

School is obsolete

How do we make school relevant again? How do we make learning/ Geography a real experience for our students? How do we make school relevant again? How do we make learning/ Geography a real experience for our students?

ICT is a tool Its part of an activity Its not the whole activity Learning happen through the use of computers not BECAUSE of computers

If a child can’t learn the way we teach, maybe we should teach the way they learn Ignacio Estrada

Will Richardson wrote: “Schools as we know them developed in a particular place and time to meet a specific set of social and economic needs. But times have changed, and the way we need to think about education has changed too.”
