Year 8 Design Technology Homework Task Sheet Situation: The Olympic games is a fantastic sporting event which brings together a number of countries and cultures to compete in what is the biggest spectacle in the sporting world. The event starts with a huge opening ceremony that is shown on TV across the world. All countries that compete showcase their culture at the ceremony and present their athletes to the rest of the world. Task: You have been asked by the organisers of the Olympics to come up with a design for a new training shoe for the 2012 Olympic games. The trainer will be used to promote the event by being worn by the athletes at the opening ceremony. Each trainer will be designed specifically for the country that the athlete represents and will have some cultural influence within the design. Brief: You are to choose a country and culture that you wish to design your training shoe for from the list on the following page. Once you have decided on a country you need to do some research on the culture of that country - you need to research the following: The colours and design of the flag Any symbols that represent that country (i.e. dragon – China) Any other landmarks/buildings/famous people that you could use as part of your design (Eiffel Tower – France) Some key words that represent that country (‘ole’ – Spain) After you have completed the research you need to add your design to the template of the training shoe adding notes to explain how your design represents the country that it is designed for.

You can choose from the following competing countries: AustraliaBrazilCanada ChinaFranceGermany Great BritainHollandItaly JamaicaJapanMexico New ZealandSpainUSA Assessment: All students…….. will research a country/culture and come up with a design for training shoe. Most students……. will go into more detail with the research of the culture and produce a good design for the training shoe including colours and symbols. Some students……. Will add detailed descriptions to the final design to emphasise how the trainer represents the country/culture and their thinking behind their choice of design. Useful Websites: The literacy skills you’ll need to use are………. Use of key words; internet research; annotation and description The numeracy skills you’ll need to use are………. Very limited, but use of numbers in design work
