Unit 1 SELF-ASSESMENT Chapter 1 You & the World of Work

Chapter 1 Objectives Explain how a job differs from a career. Understand how your career plans will be shaped by your skills and abilities, as well as the job outlook. Analyze how the workplace is affected by forces such as changing technology and the global economy.

KEY TERMS Job - work that people do for pay Career - A series of related jobs built on a foundation of interest, knowledge, training and experience. Lifestyle - The way a person uses his or her time, energy, and resources.

Key Concepts Write a brief reply to each question? 1.Why is it a bad idea to choose a job just because it pays well? 2.Describe a situation that might cause a person to change his or her main reason for working. 3.How does global economy affect the job market? 4.Choose a career you interested in, & describe how technology may affect it. 5.Why do some employers consider personal qualities more important than experience or special skills?

Student Portfolio Project Select a career that seems interesting and exciting based on the way it’s portrayed on TV or in the movies. Do some research on what the career is like in real life. You can do this by arranging an interview with someone who actually works in the field and by consulting the Internet or traditional library resources. In an essay or presentation, of the career changed as a result of your research. Document your sources in an annotated bibliography.

Oral Assignment Give a short explanation of how a person’s career choices affect lifestyle and motivation to work.

Lesson 1 Read the help wanted ads in the Argus Leader and Local Paper. Write a short paragraph on which types of occupations have the most openings in these newspapers. Note: Students should have at least two paragraphs, and using proper writing skills.
