1 Planning a Career

2 Objectives Students will be able to:
Explain what a career is and how to plan for one. Learn vocabulary associated with careers. Locate information about careers using a variety of media resources. Determine their personal skills, abilities, and aptitudes when it relates to careers.

3 Standards Career Development – Self Awareness: Personal Skills, Abilities & Aptitudes A – Identify careers that are related to student interests, abilities, and aptitudes. 1.1.8 F – Understand the meaning of and apply key vocabulary across the various subject areas.

4 Studying a Career: CAREER – a goal in life that is fulfilled through an occupation or series of occupations. GOAL – is something specific you want to achieve. 2 types: short term & long term goals CAREER PLANNING – 3 STEP PROCESS: Study careers Assess yourself in terms of careers 3. Make decisions about a future career.

5 Finding Career Information:
Guidance / Career Office Internet Books Newspapers- “The Classifieds” Guidance / Career Office Internet Books Newspapers- “The Classifieds” Magazines Word of Mouth Job shadow Government Employment Office

6 Getting Insight: Networking – talking to people you know personally, and those you don’t know to get information about a career. Career Information Interview – a planned discussion with a worker to find out about the work that person does, the preparation necessary for that career, and the person’s feelings about their career.

7 Finding Out About You: Values – the things that are important to you.
Mobility – the willingness and ability of a person to move to where jobs are located. Talents – a natural, inborn aptitude to do certain things. Abilities – the quality of being able to perform a mental or physical task.

8 Making Career Decisions:
A Tentative Career Decision – is a decision that is subject to change or modification as new information is received. Steps to follow to make a decision…

9 Steps to making a Career Decision:
Gather as much information as you can about your career and yourself. Analyze what you have learned about careers and yourself. Think about different plans of action and what might happen if you follow each one. Select what seems to be the best plan of action and follow it. Evaluate your career decision from time to time.
