Clarifying the Vision & Themes July 8, 2010 at Johns Hopkins University Co-Leaders Anne Pellicciotto & Kristen Barney

 Goals:  Integrate new voices  Clarify vision, themes, format for SIG  Agenda:  Introduction and Overview  Review of Mission, Principles, Format  SIG Vision- Venn Diagram Exercise  Building on the Themes  Next Steps, Closing 2

 The OD-ICD SIG provides a forum for attendees to learn about and discuss: ◦ the challenges and imperatives in international and community development, ◦ how OD can increasingly play a role in building sustainable organizations and improving outcomes for the world’s developing countries and communities, and ◦ how development practices and lessons learned can inform and shape the field of OD. 3

 Organization Development is a dynamic values-based approach to systems change in organizations and communities; it strives to build the capacity to achieve and sustain a new desired state that benefits the organization or community and the world around them. (OD Network)  International Development is the work of agencies and institutions to advance Human Development -- the process of expanding the freedom of individuals to pursue the kind of lives they value. (e.g. UNDP, Amartya Sen)  Community Development is a holistic, integrated, and interative process engaging community members in defining issues, goals, and plans; taking ownership of the community; building on what works; mobilizing sustainable resources; and collaborating to realize goals, building social capital in the process (various sources). 4

 Topics and speakers will ideally address synergies between three fields  Participants will also create connections between fields  Presentations will focus on: ◦ multiple levels of system (infrastructure to community) ◦ human development ◦ global community, including US 5

 Home-Grown: The pool of presenters will draw from resources within the room, supplemented with outside presenters as needed/desired.  Participatory: Presentations will ideally be participatory and experiential, to model best practices from OD/ID/CD.  Dynamic Membership: Group is beyond what’s in the room; flexible and evolving.  Awareness: Participants, presenters, and leaders will stay aware of the dynamics in the group and openly discuss issues of power, etc. which also exist in OD/ID/CD.  Transparency/Safety: Proceedings will be captured in high- level notes and posted on the CBODN web site, in order to: ◦ model transparency and information sharing, and ◦ maintain a safe meeting space for dialogue and discovery 6

 Action-Learning Process: SIG will evolve through our collective learning and evolving participation/needs/desires.  Iterative Cycles: One theme presentation/session per month over five months; pause to reflect, integrate, and refocus; new cycle.  Theme Leaders: Volunteers to lead theme areas, guide the selection of presenters, commit to attendance.  Schedule: ◦ August 2010: Theme Leaders’ Meeting ◦ September 2010: Theme 1 ◦ October 2010: Theme 2 ◦ November 2010: Theme 3 ◦ December 2010: Theme 4 ◦ January 2011: Theme 5 ◦ February 2011: Reflection, Integration, and Refocusing for next 6 months 7

 Sustainability  Multi-Culturalism /“Inter-culturality”/Identity  Partnerships  Complexity Science/ Knowledge Management  Power and Empowerment 8

 Step into the zone that represents your experience and background  Who’s in the Room? ◦ Where are you and where would you like to expand?  Overall Reflection ◦ Observations/realizations from this exercise? 9

 How would you clarify and build-on these themes? ◦ Sustainability ◦ Multi-Culturalism / “Inter-culturality” / Identity ◦ Partnerships ◦ Complexity Science / Knowledge Management ◦ Power and Empowerment  Provide information to assist SIG leaders in planning theme sessions/selecting presenters  Complete worksheets 10

 Action-Learning Process: Through our collective learning we will become clearer about what we want to achieve.  Iterative Cycles: We will have one presentation on each theme over five months and then pause to reflect, integrate, and refocus.  Theme Leaders: Five participants with strong commitment to monthly attendance will become Theme Leaders, to guide the selection of presenters.  Schedule: ◦ August 2010: Theme Leaders’ Meeting ◦ September 2010: Theme 1 ◦ October 2010: Theme 2 ◦ November 2010: Theme 3 ◦ December 2010: Theme 4 ◦ January 2011: Theme 5 ◦ February 2011: Reflection, Integration, and Refocusing for next 6 months 11
