NIH K-22 Application Career Transition Award

Institute- and Center-Specific Awards under K-22 NCI: The NCI Transition Career Development Award (K22) (PAR ) (Expires January 8, 2012) – To facilitate the transition of investigators, primarily those with clinical doctoral degrees as well as those with doctoral degrees working in the areas of cancer prevention, control, behavioral, or population science research, from the mentored stage of career development in academic cancer research to the independent stage. This goal is achieved by providing protected time through salary and research support for 3 years to: postdoctoral individuals or junior faculty in mentored positions transitioning into their first independent position; and investigators within the first 2 years of their first independent cancer research position, to initiate and develop their independently-supported cancer research programs. NCI: NCI Transition Career Development Award to Promote Diversity (K22) (PAR ) (Expires January 8, 1012) – To help ensure that a diverse pool of highly trained scientists are available in adequate numbers and in appropriate research areas to address the nation's biomedical, behavioral, and clinical research needs. The Diversity Training Branch (DTB), the Center to Reduce Cancer Health Disparities (CRCHD) ( and the Office of the Director (OD) ( invite applications from recipients of the NCI Mentored Career Development Award to Promote Diversity, or from advanced postdoctoral and/or newly independent research scientists representative of groups that are underrepresented in biomedical, behavioral, clinical, and/or social sciences. This award will provide "protected time" for recipients to develop and receive support for their initial cancer research program. In addition, this award can provide a two-year mentored experience in NCI intramural programs for interested individuals. The unique feature of this award is that the individuals may apply without a sponsoring institution while they are still in a mentored position. NHLBI: NHLBI Career Transition Award (K22) (PAR ) (Expires May 8, 2012) – To provide highly qualified postdoctoral fellows with an opportunity to receive mentored research experience in the NHLBI Division of Intramural Research and then to provide them with bridge funding to facilitate the transition of their research programs as new investigators at extramural institutions. To achieve these objectives, the NHLBI Career Transition Award will support two phases of research: an intramural phase (two years) and an extramural phase (3 yrs), for a total of 5 years of combined support. Transition from the intramural phase of support to the extramural phase is not automatic. Approval of the transition will be based on the success of the awardees research program as determined by an NHLBI progress review, which will include an evaluation of a research plan to be carried out at the extramural institution.

Institute- and Center-Specific Awards under K-22 NIAAA: NIAAA Career Transition Award (K22) (PAR ) (Expires January 8, 2012) – To enable outstanding new investigators to establish an independent research program in basic or clinical research related to the health risks and benefits of alcohol consumption, or the prevention and treatment of alcohol-related problems. This is achieved by providing salary and core research support for up to three years after candidates receive faculty appointments at academic research institutions. NIAID: NIAID Research Scholar Development Award (K22) (PAR ) (Expires February 11, 2012) – To increase and maintain a strong cohort of new and talented NIH-supported independent investigators that will address the health needs of the Nation. The NIAID RSDA is specifically designed to facilitate the transition from a postdoctoral research position to an independent research position. NIMH: NIMH Career Transition Award for Intramural Investigators (K22) (PAR ) (Expires September 8, 2012) – To provide support for career intramural investigators at NIMH who aim to transition from the Division of Intramural Research Programs (DIRP) to a research position in the extramural community. Principal investigators will have a demonstrated record of meritorious research in mental health-related fields. NINR: NINR Career Transition Award (K22) (PAR ) (Expires May 8, 2012) – To provide up to 5 years of support consisting of two phases. The initial phase will provide up to 2 years of mentored intramural experience for highly promising, postdoctoral research scientists in an NIH intramural program. This phase will be followed by up to 3 years of extramural support contingent on securing an independent tenure-track or equivalent research position. The NINR Career Transition award is limited to postdoctoral trainees who propose research relevant to the mission of the National Institute of Nursing Research (NINR) NLM: NLM Independent Career Development Award for Biomedical Informatics (K22) (PAR ) (Expires May 8, 2013) – To facilitate the transition of investigators from the mentored to the independent stage of their careers by providing "protected time" for newly independent investigators to develop and receive support for their initial research programs. The award applies to biomedical informaticians who are pursuing research in clinical informatics, public health informatics or translational informatics. Preference will be given to candidates who received their informatics training at one of NLM’s university-based training programs in biomedical informatics.

NIH K-22 Application Overall goal: The overall goal of the NIH Research Career Development Award program is to prepare qualified individual postdoctoral fellows to faculty position careers that have a significant impact on the health-related research needs of the Nation. Duration: 3 to 5 years Awards: -Salaries and fringe (based on full-time, 12-months staff appointment; must devote at least 75% FTE) -Research development support (tuition/fees, research expenses; travel to research meetings/trainings; statistical services) -Mentors do not receive any salary compensation

NIH K-08 Application – PA Program Director/Principle Investigator (PD/PI): Also referred to as the Applicant or Candidate, individuals with the skills, knowledge, and resources necessary to carry out the proposed research and career development activities are invited to work with their mentor and sponsoring institution to develop an application for support. Individuals from underrepresented racial and ethnic groups, individuals with disabilities, and individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds are always encouraged to apply for NIH support.
