Today’s Presentation: Safety  Home  Community  School  As parents we have to create an environment that makes our children feel safe. Our children need to be able to ask us questions, even if we think they should know the answers. Easton 2

Inside  The decision to leave your child at home unattended is based on the parents confidence in their maturity level, there is not a legal age. Lewis 4

My professional opinion is that, if you have to question if your child is mature enough to be left at home than the answer is probably NO. Lewis 5

What information is needed:  Emergency numbers  Police, Fire, Family member  Parents, immediate family numbers  Cell phone versus land line?  Cell phone, password protected????  Cordless phone, returned to the hook  Address cooking or non cooking with your child Lewis 6

Practice Make sure that your child/children know the numbers of the emergency personal as well as their parents.  Its not enough to make sure that the child knows the number, they must be able to dial the number.  Street name (complete address is ideal)  First, last name. Nicknames use your best judgment Lewis 7

Role Play:  Simulate a real phone call, more than once. At least 4 times of doing it correctly.  True emergency, anxiety takes over, numbers posted in addition to memorizing. Lewis 8

Outside  Stranger Danger  Teach the children to not get close to the vehicle or any adult.  No safe adult is going to be asking a child directions or asking them to help find their puppy. Lewis 10

Outside  With a friend at all times  Child’s Boundaries: aware of where they can go.  Walk boundaries with the child. Puppy, train them by walking the yards.  Verbally, review them with the child.  Bus stop, all parents are present, however, it is a good habit to walk home with a friend.  Establish a safe house, good habit. Police  Please discourage negative behavior towards the police. We NEED our children to associate the police as the people who will help. Sonntag 14

Police  Reality; as an adult if the police are pulling you over and giving you a speeding ticket, no one in the car is going to be happy. Be careful what your child hears you say. Sonntag 15

Gun Safety  Don't think you're child doesn't know where your gun is...They do!  When sending your child to a sleepover, ask the parents if they own any guns. It is YOUR Business!! Sonntag 16

Community  Make it a habit: at the beginning of any trip to a store, or an outing make sure that you predetermine an emergency meeting spot. Go to the spot with your child, make sure they understand. Takes one extra minute. Create a rhyme or a song for them to remember. Sonntag 19

School  District 117 has crisis plans in place, educates the staff and holds regular drills to teach the children.  Please reinforce this at home with your children. We do not want the children to be afraid, however, we do need to be prepared. Easton 21

District 117 does have a lockdown procedure in place.  If there is a lockdown, parents do not come to the school to get their children.  Parents will slow down law enforcement and take away from the crisis.  District does have the capability to send out mass calls in case of a true emergency.  Assure you that there is a system in place.
