Implementation of the PA Core Standards

Effective Communication Guiding Principle 1 Design and establish systems of effective communication among stakeholders to continuously identify areas of need and disseminate information.

Questions to Consider Question 1: Who are the stakeholders? Question 2: How will we identify areas of need? Question 3: What evidence will demonstrate effective communication? Question 4: How will information be disseminated? Question 5: How will we make the cycle of reflection continuous?

Guiding Principle 2 Facilitate continuous high quality professional learning opportunities for educators who are prepared to teach and assess to the rigor and depth of PA Core. Professional Learning

Questions to Consider Question 1: How will a needs assessment, school improvement, and multi-dimensional data inform the professional learning plan? Question 2: How will we use data from PA’s Educator Effectiveness Framework to plan for professional learning plan? Question 3: How will we assure that the professional learning is continuous and sustainable? Question 4: How will we measure implementation of teacher learning?

Evaluate and Align Guiding Principle 3 Evaluate and align existing curriculum, instruction, supporting materials, resources, and assessments to PA Core Standards; create new assets as necessary.

Questions to Consider Question 1: How does the rigor of our existing curriculum compare to the state’s model curriculum? Question 2: How do our local assessments align to the PA Core Standards and reflect a higher Depth of Knowledge? Question 3: DO our resources provide students access to the rigor and content of the PA Core Standards?

Reflect Guiding Principle 4 Build in a cycle of reflection to support continuous improvement.

Questions to Consider Question 1: What are the protocols for examining district data? Question 2: How do we determine what data to collect and examine? Question 3: How do we stay current with research and best practice to inform continuous improvement?

Stages of Implementation Implementation is a process that does not happen all at once; it occurs in discernable stages. The stages are not linear or separate; each appears to impact the others in complex ways. Adapted from Implementation: The Missing Link Between Research and Practice, Dean Fixsen

Educators will: Familiarize themselves with the PA Core Standards and Educator Effectiveness Framework Participate in overview trainings District/building level administrators and/or instructional leaders will: Establish a vision Work with implementation team Participate in professional development

Instructional leaders will: Provide focused professional development Assure roles and responsibilities defined, supported by SMART goals. Share established communication plan with stakeholders Educators will: Utilize SAS resources Participate in professional development Unpack the standards to assure understnading Examine instructional resources and assessments

Instructional leaders will: Establish curriculum, instruction and assessment cycle protocols Look for evidence that professional learning has impacted curriculum, instruction and assessment Move effective implementation forward and address sustainability Commit resources to support implementation Support professional learning communities Assure capacity is reached at all levels Educators will: Evaluate curriculum, instruction, and assessment Participate in professional development Effectively participate in Professional Learning Communities Create high quality instructional units, lesson plans, and appropriate assessments aligned to PA Core.

Instructional leaders will: Adjust organizational supports to facilitate and support educators Assure new effective practices are shared with staff Assure that practices in place continue to be improved if appropriate Utilize learning walks and benchmarks to monitor progress Continuously make evidenced-based adjustments Educators will: Seek out learning opportunities for professional growth Monitor student progress and provide differentiated instruction Continuously make data-driven adjustments Implement PA Core Standards with fidelity

Instructional leaders will: Engage in continuous evaluation of the PA Core and alignment to Educator Effectiveness framework examine all relevant data Update and revise the implementation plan Educators will: continuously reflect, update and refine their practices to improve effectiveness of instruction and student learning. Examine all relevant data to determine effectiveness of school improvement efforts Revise curriculum, instruction and assessment based on data and participate in shared leadership
