Citywide Instructional Expectations, Teacher Teams and the QR—Implications for 2013-2014 Mary Barton SATIF CFN 204 May 17, 2013

Teacher Teams and their work  The work of teacher teams will be even more of an essential element for the work around the Common Core and Teacher Effectiveness to be successfully implemented in 2013-14 school year. Teacher team work is mentioned or implied in all of the QR indicators for 2013-14.  Teacher team work is specifically mentioned in the following indicators:  1.3  3.4  4.2  5.1

Reflection  Read the indicators/sub indicators on the QR rubric for 2013-14 that specifically mention teacher teams in the proficient category (1.3 b, 3.4 c, 4.2 and 5.1c). Write down some bullet points around the work as to where your school is at the present time. Compare where your school is to the expectations of the rubric.  Have a discussion at your table around the gaps that you have between the QR expectations and teacher teams present practice. What are some practices that you can share with each another around improving practices of teacher teams and their work?

Citywide Instructional Expectations, Teacher Teams and the QR—Summary of Expectations  Prepare: Set up to meet higher standards  Ensure curricula are aligned to standards in all content areas (1.1, 2.2)  Prepare to implement a new system of teacher evaluation and development (4.1, 4.2)  Organize the school to meet the needs of all students  Establish an instructional focus (1.2, 3.1, 3.4)  Ensure school time is used strategically. (1.3, 4.2)  Plan for both short term and sustained professional learning experiences. (1.4, 3.1, 4.1, 4.2)

Citywide Instructional Expectations, Teacher Teams and the QR—Summary of Expectations  Implement: Move students toward meeting higher standards  Students: Experience rigorous instruction. (1.1, 1.2, 1,4, 3.4)  Teachers: Shift classroom practice (1.2)  School leaders: Actively support teacher growth. (1.2, 4.1, 4.2)

Citywide Instructional Expectations, Teacher Teams and the QR—Summary of Expectations  Assess: Review evidence of meeting higher standards  Create systems to look for evidence of growth and gaps and make adjustments. (2.2, 4.2, 5.1)

Teacher Teams  Organize the school to meet the needs of all students.  Establish an instructional focus that creates coherence among multiple initiatives, clearly frames the work teachers and school leaders will prioritize to narrow the gap between what students currently know and are able to do, and allows for strategic use of resources.

Teacher Teams  Continue to assure that school time is used strategically.  Time for teachers to work in teams (WD expectation is that teams have “substantial and regular meetings that are deliberately structured to align teacher workflow to school’s instructional goals and maximizes teacher time on instructional work…”

Teacher Teams  Engage teacher leaders to support the school’s instructional agenda.

Teacher Teams will: Implement: Move students toward meeting higher standards  Shift classroom practice  In 2013-14, teacher teams should focus on changes to classroom practice.  Teachers should actively participate in their own development as teachers, supported by the new system of teacher evaluation and development.

Teacher Teams  School leaders will actively support teacher growth.  Support teachers and teacher teams in planning lessons and units, strengthening teacher practices, looking at student work for evidence of learning and gaps, and making purposeful adjustments to narrow the gap between what students require and what students know and are able to do.

Teacher Teams  Assess: Review evidence of meeting higher standards  Create systems to regularly and collaboratively look for evidence of growth and gaps in student work and teacher practice in order to make adjustments. (2.2, 4.2, 5.1)  Will review student work and contributions to classroom activities for evidence of individual student growth and gaps in learning in relation to both standards and academic and personal behaviors and make evidence based adjustments to their units, lessons and teaching practices.

Teacher Teams will regularly:  Share successful instructional practices and the evidence of their success through formal and informal structures.  Reflect on their work to identify areas for growth and actively participate in their own development.

Action planning moving forward  After our discussion this morning and around your conversation at your tables, think about three areas for growth around the work of your teacher teams in connection with the CIE and the QR.  What are three actionable items that your school leadership could be put in place around your school’s teams as we move forward?

Thank you!  Thank you for your attention and thoughtful work this morning.  Any questions?  Contact Mary Barton at mbarton@schools.nyc.org.
