South Dakota Co-Occurring Disorders Project

Facing Challenges It is estimated that over 80% people seeking treatment have both substance use and mental health disorders. These dual disorders are often referred to as co-occurring disorders. ** Music Provided by Staind entitled, “The Corner.” 2008 Atlantic Recording Corporation

This project is helping people with the greatest challenges. the people who often stumble and fall…. the people who are said to have “failed”….. the people who still wish for a better life.

The Shelter of Addiction and Mental Illness

Shelter The weather of addiction and mental illness is turbulent….. full of sadness, confusion, hurt, anger…… and pain.

On the inside… The road is a complex weave of services. Hospitalization Detoxification Residential Treatment Outpatient Treatment Community-based case management NA/AA meetings

The Corner Each day there are thousands stuck on the corner between…. Recovery and Hopelessness They fear letting loved ones down and letting themselves down.

A Star is there…. Service providers are there to listen--to build on a person’s strengths, even when it seems there’s nothing there to build on. Finding periods of success Finding a “happy life goal” Finding support So they can find themselves again.

“You can’t change my mind.” Providers listen for the Stage of Change for each problem. And seek to understand the road already taken. Pre-contemplation Contemplation Preparation Action Maintenance

Faces Change….Names are familiar. They often face the same agencies over and over again. Mental health agencies Substance abuse agencies Criminal Justice system Homeless Shelters Doctors offices/Hospitals Victim/trauma Shelters Child Protection Services And others….

The Test of Time Comes… When people served can walk through the door and celebrate every time a step is taken toward his/her happy life goal. That’s where progress happens.

The Walk toward “Home” continues as…. Providers adjust their practice toward: Welcoming and Engagement Integrated Screening and Assessment Strength-based, Client-Centered Care Continuous, Comprehensive Services

Hope is the Star to wish on When providers offer- Empathy with the reality of despair. Permission to ASK for help. A vision of pride and dignity.

Even when tribulations come… There are moments when the stars of hope still shine.

The Road continues with Partnerships Division of Mental Health and Division of Alcohol and Drug Abuse Human Services Center Community Mental Health Centers Alcohol and Drug Agencies “Change Agents” or Front-Line Staff Community agencies Building an integrated system of care

Serenity Prayer of Change “ Grant me the serenity to accept the things I can not change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.”

Look through the Window… It’s about sharing resources. It’s about solving problems collectively. It’s about flexible approaches to care. It’s about collaboration.

Changing the World one day at a time… Developing Comprehensive, Continuous, Integrated Systems of Care

The Future is no longer just a…. But reality after the long journey to the top.

Shelter is at the place we all sit together.
