Lesson 4 : Computer Literacy Basics Laquan Hale

Maintenance Issues To maintain optimal performance, you have to keep up with your hardware. Even if you do not download anything, you might still experience problems. A good thing to check for is tangled or damaged cables.

Hardware Maintenance In general you should clean a computer every 3 to 6 months. It is important that you check for dust, dirt, hair and food particles.

Upgrades And Consumables If your hardware device starts experiencing problems you might have to update the device driver. It is also smart to check the memory. If all else fails replacing the device is always a solution.

Preventative Maintenance All computers slow down as you add/delete files and do other normal activities.

Specialized Maintenance Replacing processors Replacing or adding a hard disk Replacing electrical components Replacing or adding additional RAM

Cookies Is a small text file that a website uses to recognize a certain computer Are not a threat to your computer Mostly used to gather information about your surfing habits

Computer Memory One way to measure a computers power Adding RAM generally speeds up a computers performance RAM is a type of temporary memory

Disk Defragmentation You should run the Disk Defrag as a regular maintenance job. Puts the subdivided clusters of a file back together.

Recycle Bin Stores files that are ready for deletion. Once a file is deleted from here it can not be restored

Temporary Files Used free memory for other programs Used to act as a safety net to prevent data loss Used by apps and programs to work faster
