Community Forum on Teen Drug Use Wednesday, May 7, :30 PM to 8:30 PM Ramsey High School Auditorium Ramsey Schools Ramsey Police Department West Bergen Mental Health Clinic

Community Forum on Teen Drug Use This presentation designed to provide parents with information about the current drug trends, including heroin and prescription drug use. The goals of the parent program include: 1.Overview of the district’s drug education program 2.Prevention strategies and services available to parents 3.Overview of teen drug use 4.Legal implications 5. Indicators of drug use 6. Tips for discussing drugs with your children

Community Forum on Teen Drug Use The term in loco parentis, Latin for “in the place of a parent” – Rules (Board, School, and classroom policies and procedures) – Mutual Respect – Open Communication – Discipline (to teach) – Support (Counseling)

PREVENTION Curriculum- All students receive drug and alcohol education – Signs and symptoms – Effects of each drug on the body – How to help in an Alcohol/Drug Crisis – Impaired driving including the use of Fatal Vision Goggles to simulation

PREVENTION Parent Network meets once a month to: – Teach discipline using natural and logical consequences – Improving communication – Encouraging responsibility – Parenting as a united front – Signs of alcohol and drug use and how to intervene

INTERVENTION AND REFERRAL Drug and Alcohol Policy – Clear zero tolerance – Disciplinary actions – Emergency intervention – Referral/help built into the policy

INTERVENTION AND REFERRAL Student Assistance Counselor – Individual and Group – Referral to Outside Agencies and Programs – Family sessions

INTERVENTION AND REFERRAL Core Team – Meets weekly – Teachers/parents/students can make referrals – Team develops intervention action plan – Referrals
