There are several characters but these are the main ones. Kenny the middle child is very smart and curious. Byron is the oldest and he and his best friend Buphead get into trouble all the time. Joey is the youngest, loves her big brother Byron, and is very sweet. Their mother is very serious and when she gets angry she talks really southern. Their father loves to joke around with his family which gets the mother mad all the time.

The story takes place In Flint, Michigan in Later in the story The Watsons travel to Birmingham, Alabama.

Byron is sent to Birmingham, Alabama because he skips school and lights fires inside his house after his mom tells him not to. When they get to Birmingham, his grandparents start thinking that his younger brother Kenny should stay with them because of the way he talks to his mom and everyone else.

One day Kenny thinks he sees his sister Joey at church. There is a bomb and he thinks his sister was hurt. Did he see her or did he imagine it? If you want to know the rest, you should read the book.
