Body Parts of an Ant

Abdomen The abdomen accomodates the crop, stomach, intestines and poison gland. In winter, the amount of fat is increased and the abdomen becomes hard and thick.

Head The head houses the Ant ’ s eye.The ant has a faceted or compound eye formed by a collection of small individual eyes. The rough shape of an object can be determined from the light and shade reflected on the individual faces

Mandibles The mandible is used to hold an object in order to carry or bite it. When frightened, an odoriferous substance is secreted from the base of the mandible to warn fellow ants.

Petiole The petiole is a node comprising one or two abdominal pedicels existing between the thorax and the abdomen, which is seen only in ants. Ants can be discriminated by the shape and number of petioles.
