General Education How do the Gen Ed Competencies fit in?

How do you apply the Gen Ed competency to a course? Review your collegewide, common, core course outcomes list. Look for outcomes where the competency is already reflected When you assess that outcome use an instrument that includes the competency.

Embedding Gen Ed. Competencies SLO- Students will be able to discuss the extent and impact of crime in America today (CJ 110) Gen Ed Competency- Effective Written and Oral communication Assessment- Oral presentation or written report that is scored on both the content and elements of either oral or written communication.

Tips on Embedding Gen Ed Competencies Look for what is already in the course- what competencies are students given the opportunity to learn and practice the competency. Don’t just list the competency- align the competency with the course content. Don’t try to fit in something that doesn’t really fit with the course- don’t make an artificial alignment.
