Homeland Defense is a National Imperative
Definitions Homeland Defense- – Joint Publication JP 3-27 states that Homeland Defense is our nation’s first priority. (CDRUSNORTHCOM, Director for Operations (J-3). 2007). The stated objective for the U.S. Department of Defense is to defeat threats to the homeland from a safe distance. It further defines Homeland Defense as the protection of US sovereignty, territory, domestic population, and critical defense infrastructure against external threats and aggression, or other threats as directed by the President. DOD is responsible for the HD mission, and therefore leads the HD response, with other departments and agencies in support of DOD efforts. (CDRUSNORTHCOM, Director for Operations (J-3). 2007)

Homeland Security- – This differs from Homeland Security which is defined in Air Force Doctrinal Document 2-10, Homeland Operations, as a concerted national effort to prevent terrorist attacks, reduce a nation’s vulnerability to terrorism, and minimize the damage and recover from attacks that do occur.
