Using Numbers A guide

Calculations  About half the Part A questions are calculations. These will usually involve  Identifying an appropriate formula/equation  Rearranging the equation to make the desired answer the subject  Substituting numbers in the equation and calculating a result  You may, on occasions be asked to interpret the answer.

Calculations – some hints  The answer to a calculation represents an actual quantity, so you must include units  Beware excess precision.  The data does not justify a final answer of more than 3 or 4 significant figures  You should perform calculations at the precision of your calculator then round the final answer to not more than four figures

Calculations – more hints  You will be dealing with very large numbers so be familiar with and use scientific notation (aka standard form)  e.g. 3.4 x Joules.  Also be familiar with SI unit prefixes (kilo-, mega-, tera- etc.)  Be clear on the distinction between kilowatts and kilowatt-hours. (see units handout)
