Presentation transcript:

In our literacy lessons we have to become good detectives... We need to be able to use clues to help us identify text types.. We need to be able to work out hidden or obscure meanings.... We need to be able to identify, collect and investigate devices used... Such as particular words and phrases... We need to be able to spot when and how a writer is trying to influence our way of thinking

When a writer is trying to influence our way of thinking opinion may often be disguised as fact so.. We need to......know the difference between fact, fantasy and opinion

You have ten minutes to discuss with your table partners and write.. 1.A definition of a fact 2.A definition of fantasy 3.A definition of an opinion 4.Assign the job of spokesperson At the end of ten minutes the spokesperson for each table will read out the definitions

Now Look up the definitions in your dictionary You have 5 minutes to find the definitions and decide if your table definitions were 1.Spot on 2.Partially right 3.Not even nearly...

Yahoo childrens dictionary

Let’s see if you can decide which of these are fact, fantasy or opinion

Fact: A baby dog is called a puppy. The Olympic games are held every four years. Wayne Rooney is a football player. The 2012 Olympics will be held in London. Fantasy: The queen is 100years old. Gordon Brown was the first person to swim the English channel Queen Victoria was the first person to fly to the moon. King Arthur was a keen supporter of Man Utd. Opinion: Wolves are cruel and vicious creatures. Most females are frightened of spiders. More people should give money to charity. If people exercised more they would not become overweight.

OK DETECTIVES Now we should be able to spot attempts to disguise facts as opinions....
