SPEECH CONTENTScore _______ / 100 Introduction: Gets audience’s attention; states the purpose/topic of the speech. Body: Logical organization with transitions; ideas presented and supported well; depth of research apparent and a learning stretch. Conclusion: Effectively ends entire presentation by reviewing items covered, and coming to a clear ending. Diction: Language is appropriate to the topic. Unless part of the presentation, language should reflect correct grammar. Coverage: Topic is fully covered, with no obvious omissions of material relevant to the topic. Full credit will be given in this area if you are wearing a costume made especially for the presentation. Costume should enhance your presentation. Otherwise, dress will be judged by business standards. Dress and Appearance

Gentlemen: shirts and ties, dress slacks, jackets are not required, dress shoes and dark socks, sneakers or sandals are not acceptable, personal hygiene, piercings, jewelry.

Ladies: –business suit, –skirt with a nice conservative blouse, –or dress with sleeves, –knee length, –pant suits are appropriate, –no open-toed shoes, sneakers, or flip flops, –no outlandish jewelry or hair styles, –piercings, –no skin, –personal hygiene.

Hose are no longer the fashion, but closed shoes are preferable in lieu of open-toed shoes. The workplace can vary concerning the different types of shoes that can be worn, but closed-toed are usually the safe avenue for any job.

VISUAL AIDS Purpose: To clarify your speech— SHOULD NOT BE THE FOCUS OF YOUR PRESENTATION ! PowerPoint—DO NOT READ!!! Do not turn your back to the audience VIDEO—No longer than 2 minutes. Counts as part of your 8-10 minute presentation.

RESPONSE to JUDGES’ QUESTIONS Score _______ / 100 Student’s honest effort and involvement with his/her work is clear. Competent answers reflect confidence in speaker’s knowledge. Answers show depth and understanding of research. Answers reflect commendable effort on product. COMMENT: ________________________________________

Each presenter will be asked at least 2 or 3 questions from the judges. Purpose: To see how you respond to unprepared answers. Bear in mind that with only 12 – 15 hours of experience and a short research project, you will be judged on the limited knowledge you have. Magnet students—you will have had more hours and more in depth research. 5-MINUTE QUESTION AND ANSWER PERIOD

ROOM ASSIGNMENTS Student Needs Form—Must be filled out. No Needs—Be sure to mark. Failure to indicate your needs, room will be assigned randomly. Needs Form is Due No Later than November 5th. NO ROOM CHANGES

IMPORTANT If your mentor evaluation forms are not in, you will not be assigned to a board room.

MENTOR HOURS Hours were to have been completed by April 11th. If you have completed the hours, go ahead and have your mentor fax your forms to Mrs. Nicely. Due April. 15 th. Mentors were contacted last week. Check with your mentors.

PORTFOLIOS DUE APRIL 22 nd COMPLETED !!! Teacher Committee will check for content the week of April th. If portfolios are not turned in and a grade given by April 25th, you will not present. You will be removed from your assigned Board Room.

Room Assignments will be given to you on Monday April 25. Check your assigned room. DO NOT wait until the day of the Boards. Plan how you will present, where you will put your product and how you will show your visual. Test your PowerPoint on the computer to be used in that room. CHECK ROOMS

Board Day Portfolio—place in the CORRECT Board Room box located in MC. Must be in the box by 3:00 pm. –Include 1 extra copy of your Letter to the Judges Report to the cafeteria between 5:45-6:00 –Be sure you check in with an English teacher. Do not “hang out” around the Media Center At 6:15 pm, presenters will report to their Board Rooms. First presentation will begin at 6:30 pm.

Board Room Expectations What will occur when you report to the your Board Room?

PORTFOLIOS/NOTEBOOKS Take your portfolio or notebook with you when you leave the Board Room at the end of the evening.

PIZZA PARTY Following the Boards in the cafeteria. NEXT DAY Scores and comments from the judges and your overall presentation grade. STUDENT SURVEY (Non-Magnet Students Only)

IF YOU QUESTION YOUR SCORE? What do you do? –Write a note about what you think is wrong and attach to all rubrics. –Return to your teacher who will get them to me. –A Committee will determine if your concern is legitimate. –But scores will not be changed just because you don’t agree.
