Objectives HR Management Policy Framework and Employment Legislation (Standard Area 1) Understand how HR management policy frameworks and legislation contributes to your organization’s success in achieving its mission. Know the key elements of Standard Area 1. Be aware of resources that can assist you in implementing the Standard Area. Be able to identify next steps you must take to achieve this Standard Area.

HR Management Standards Standards are grouped into 6 broad clusters (p.4) Standards Each cluster has 5 parts (p.6): – Introductory statements (intent & benefit) – The Standard statement (result to be achieved) – Standard details (what to include/what to consider) – Implementation Considerations – Links to Resources (articles, research documents, tools & templates)

Assessment Take Stock: an assessment of your organization’s core functions

Standard Area 1: HR Management Policy Framework & Legislation All employers MUST understand and comply with legislation relating to employment. Your HR policies and practices MUST take into account the laws and regulations re: the employer-employee relationship. Legislation – framework Legislation interpreted through case law

Standard 1.1: HR management policies are formalized, documented and approved by the Board or approval as designated to the CEO/ED

Features of a practical policy Good organization and layout Relevant content Clear language Fairness and flexibility Legal compliance

Standard 1.2: HR management policies comply with employment, workplace health and safety, and other related legislation as applicable in the jurisdiction in which the organization operates.
