Types of Courses Gr. 9 & 10

Four Types: Open [O] Locally-Developed [L] Applied [P] Academic [D]

Offered at all grade levels Not specific to any particular post-secondary destination Curriculum expectations suitable for all students Open courses meet compulsory or optional requirements For personal interest and growth as well Open Courses:

Compulsory courses for students whose skills fall below grade level Student’s strengths and needs will determine appropriate pathways Locally-Developed:

Academic Courses theory and abstract thinking as a basis for future learning and problem solving more student- directed Applied Courses practical applications (familiar, real- life situations to illustrate ideas) hands-on applications of the concepts more teacher- directed

Course Request… 1. English 2.Mathematics 3. Science 4.Geography 5.French or Substitute 6. Health & Physical Education To meet graduation diploma requirements, it is strongly recommended that students take the following 6 subjects in grade 9. Students may COMBINE open, locally-developed, applied and/or academic courses.

The other 2 selections for Grade 9 will be from the Open type courses only. Available at our school is: Drama Music Visual Arts Business Studies Social Sciences Technological Education …Course Request

Making the Choice… Parents and students will choose courses in collaboration with elementary school teachers, guidance counsellors and administrators. Choices should be based on needs, interests, strengths, past achievements, future dreams and passions.

Prerequisite Planning Courses in Gr. 11 and 12 have prerequisites Plan from post-secondary destinations back to Grade 9. York Region District School Board Calendar provides prerequisite flow charts
