3 Grade 8 to Grade 9 Easing the Transition... The Guidance Department at Huron Heights Each student will be assigned a Guidance Counsellor to assist in: Course selection Academic assistance Long-term educational planning and Career exploration Other personal concerns

4 OSSD Requirements Ontario Secondary School Diploma 30 Credits 40 Hours of Community Involvement (may be completed during summer 2015) Completion of the Literacy Requirement (Grade 10)

5 Course Selections: Things to Consider for Success Diploma Requirements 30 credits in a variety of areas 18 compulsory & 12 elective Course Types Academic, Applied or Open

6 Open Level Courses Appropriate for ALL students Prepare students for further study in certain subjects Enrich the educational experience overall

7 Academic Courses Emphasize theory and abstract problems Lead to College, University, or University/College courses in grades 11 and 12 Recommended MINIMUM average of 70%

8 Applied Courses Focus on practical learning and concrete examples Prepare students for entrance to some college and/or apprenticeship programs as well as direct entrance to the workplace

9 Special Education Students who have been identified through Special Education will continue to receive support through the Resource Centre at Huron Heights For more information, please contact Mr. Barth, Head of Special Education at Huron Heights, in Room 1423 throughout the night

10 Grade 9 Compulsory Courses Choose Applied (P) or Academic (D) Level English French Geography Mathematics Science

11 Grade 9 Elective Courses Choose three of the following: ADA1OI - Drama AMU1OI - Beginner or AMI1OI - Advanced Instrumental Music AMV1OI - Vocal Music AVI1OI - Visual Arts BBI1OI - Business BTT1OI - Information Technology in Business HIF1OI – Exploring Family Studies HFN1OI - Food and Nutrition PPL1OY/PPL1OX - Health and Physical Education (Male/Female) TIJ1OI - Integrated Technologies

12 What’s Next! Course Selection Forms: Complete on-line in early March Print and return the paper “working” copy with parent signature.
