Winnipeg Free Press - ONLINE EDITION Project puts St. Eustache students’ on the airwaves By: Andrea Geary04/16/2013 4:18 PM

Students from École St. Eustache went on the air at Envol 91.1FM in Winnipeg. École St. Eustache students are making waves – soundwaves that is – on their school station, Cheval Blanc. Their voices were also broadcast over Winnipeg’s Envol radio station at 91.1FM. School principal Fay Pahl said the radio broadcast was part of a project involving Action Medias, Envol’s community outreach section. Action Medias project manager Sandra Poirier worked with St. Eustache students to develop ideas for radio scripts, write the scripts and conduct interviews. Grade 5 student Brick Gower said they did some role-playing as students pretended to be famous sports figures in the interviews. Poirier said the project is also designed to introduce students to francophone musicians with a focus on local performers. "We’re trying to get them to be familiar with French music."

Brooke Legault, in Grade 4, said she and her classmates each researched a francophone musician, then used the information they gathered to write introductions to the songs they played as part of their broadcast. Gower, Legault, Shavaughn Jochum and Phillip Lemieux acted as radio hosts during broadcasts of the students’ material in the Envol station. One broadcast was done in January and a second on April 10. "At the start you get very nervous," said Lemieux, adding that a sudden nosebleed just before he went on air added to his anxiety. However, he and co-host Jochum agreed that their nervousness disappeared after the first few minutes. All the students who visited the radio station were surprised at the small size of the broadcast rooms, but said they enjoyed their experience. Pahl said students in other classes based the content of their radio scripts on Earth Day. These broadcasts will be available on the school’s website at ecolesteustache.ca in the News and Info section beginning on April 22. Facebook.com/TheHeadlinerWPG
