1 The French Trip

2 Introduction Day 1 An annual trip to Paris and Disneyland Paris is organised by the French Department. It provides students, from all Year groups, with the opportunity to visit France. Day 2 Day 3 Day 4 This French trip allows the students to practice the French they have learned. It also allows them to gain a better understanding and ability with the French language.

3 When they arrive at the Charles de Gaulle Airport, Paris, the group meet their tour guide at Place de La Concorde parking, Cours de la Reine for a Tour of Paris which covers the main landmarks in the city, such as: L'Arc de Triomphe Place de Charles de Gaulle Champs Elysées Jardins de Tuileries Louvre Notre Dame Palais Royal The students fly to Paris via Dublin Airport. They will eat at ‘Flunch’ Itinerary: Day One

4 Itinerary: Day Two The group will visit the Louvre Museum in the morning and have the chance to see the famous ‘Mona Lisa’.Louvre They’re at liberty for lunch and after they have the opportunity to visit the ‘Georges Pompidou Centre’ or take a stroll in the area to view the street acts and scenery.Georges Pompidou Centre After they are taken to see the Eiffel Tower and have the chance of going to the top floor to see the spectacular view of Paris.Eiffel Tower Dinner is reserved in ‘Flunch’. In the evening, the group takes a cruise along the river Seine.

5 Itinerary: Day Three The students are served breakfast in the hotel before departing for ‘Disneyland’. They spend all day in Euro Disney, which enables them to venture around, test out their French and have lots of fun going on the wide variety of exciting rides available. There are also lots of shops for the students to buy their gifts and other things they may need. In the evening the group eats dinner in ‘Planet Hollywood’.

6 Itinerary: Day Four The Last day of the Trip, the group of students visit: Sacré Coeur BasilicaSacré Coeur L’Arc de Triomphe Champs Elysées La Défense They are also given another opportunity to shop for any last minute gifts. They depart from the Charles de Gaulle Airport in the evening. The group will be picked up at Dublin airport by Coach links to return to the school

7 Where is Paris?  Paris is the capital and largest city of France and lies on the River Seine. Paris It has several famous monuments.It has several famous monuments. One of the most famous is the Eiffel Tower which is shown on the picture below. Paris is a city in north central France. As shown in the map opposite.

8 Eiffel Tower Built by Gustave Eiffel in 1889 for the Universal Exhibition of which it was the star. The Eiffel Tower, rising in the twilight sky above Paris, was built for the World Fair of A meteorological station, a radio communications station, and a television transmission antenna, as well as a suite of rooms that were used by Eiffel, are located near the top of the tower. The most famous monument in the world (317 metres, 10,100 tonnes).

9 L’Arc De Triomphe From the roof of the Arch there are spectacular views of Paris. Looking eastwards, down the Champs Elysées. Champs Elysées. Monument built to the glory of the French army inaugurated on 30th July Beneath the Arch is the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, and eternal flame commemorating the dead of the two world wars. Engraved around the top of the Arch are the names of major victories won during the Revolutionary and Napoleonic periods. The names of less important victories, as well as those of 558 generals, are to be found on the inside walls. Generals whose names are underlined died in action.

10 Champs Elysées The Arc de Triomphe, one of the major landmarks in Paris, stands at the top of the Champs Elysées. Below is the View from the mid point of the Champs-Elysées toward Place de la Concorde; 23 March 1995 Opposite is a picture taken from the top of the L’Arc de Triomphe. It shows the Champs Elysées. L’Arc de Triomphe is surrounded by a round-a-bout.

11 The Sacré Coeur The basilica of Sacré Coeur, on the summit of Montmartre, was completed in The Sacré Coeur is a Church that was built by the national will following the defeat in the Franco-Prussian war of The basilica was consecrated in The architect of the Sacré Coeur was Abadie ( )

12 Centre Pompidou It opened in 1977 The building houses a modern art museum, an industrial design centre, and a public library with an extensive audio-visual collection. The Centre National d’Art et de Culture Georges- Pompidou is one of the most famous tourist attractions in Paris.

13 The Louvre The Louvre houses one of the world’s largest and finest art collections. It was built in the 1200s as a fortress and expanded in the 1500s as a palace for French nobility. It became a museum in 1793 and has been periodically renovated ever since. This is an exterior view of the Louvre. It is now fronted by a glass pyramid that was designed, in 1989, by I. M.Pei. 14 Notre Dame Cathedral Below is a picture of the Notre Dame Cathedral. It is a gothic masterpiece. Road distances in France are calculated on the basis of the "0 km" marked on the square in front of the cathedral. Notre Dame, conceived by Maurice de Sully, was built between the twelfth and fourteenth centuries ( ). The north rose window (shown above) of the cathedral of Notre Dame, Paris, was made by Jean de Chelles in The great cathedral of Notre Dame (Our Lady) stands on the Île de la Cité at the heart of Paris.
