Application of geological information to situations outside the context of original study. Learn to critically evaluate the methods used to generate primary data and the interpretation of those data. Year 3: Demands coherent and detailed subject knowledge. Exhibit professional competencies, some of which will be informed by recent research/scholarship in the discipline. Develop and sustain arguments based on conceptual understanding drawing upon scholarly reviews and primary sources. Pathways within the GS programme 'Geology pathway ' provides candidates with the opportunity to undertake a broad and balanced programme of study that provides general coverage of all of the key areas within the discipline. 'Petroleum pathway ' provides training in exploration geophysics, sedimentology, structural geology, and resource geology; it is recommended for candidates intending to pursue a career in the hydrocarbons industry. 'Minerals pathway ' provides a background in ore geology, mineral exploration and structural geology; it is recommended for candidates intending to pursue a career in the extractive (mineral exploration/quarrying/ mining) industry. Regardless of which track is followed, successful completion of the programme (which is accredited by the Geological Society) will lead to the degree qualification of BSc Geological Sciences. Second question Are you thinking about an MSc course after your degree? Option Modules give you the chance to prepare for a particular type of postgraduate course. If you are interested in an MSc course in Leeds: speak to the MSc programme convenor. You need to check your proposed timetable: Core and options will not clash but individual option modules might clash with each other.

‘Special’ Modules Geology Into Schools (10 credits, Sem 1 & 2) –Introduction to secondary school teaching, focussing on geology. –20 hours spent in a school working directly with teachers & delivering material you have designed. –Limited places; if interested see/e mail Phil Murphy. –A good chance to find out if teaching is for you. –Builds contacts with local/regional schools who run geology courses. –Expect to undertake some travel but the costs will be reimbursed.

Ore Deposits & their Exploitation (Sem 1, 10 credits) –Developed in response to current worldwide shortage of exploration and mine geologists. –Reinforces practical skills of mineral/mineral assemblage identification in hand specimen and thin section. –Relationship between the mineralogy of the ore and ore processing. –Detailed study of selected mineral commodities: gold, Cu, Fe Pb/Zn. –Trip to Navan Pb/Zn Mine, Tara (nr Dublin), including underground visit. –Cost for trip: in region of £120. –LIMITED PLACES (15): YOU NEED TO APPLY TO DO THIS COURSE –Priority given to minerals track students –Get a form after this meeting: hand in to the office by Friday May 13 ‘Special’ Modules

High Temperature Processes Not obvious from the title what is involved! Research- lead module- low contact hours but a lot of private study. You choose one of the topics on offer: (some run by Dan M. some by Rob C. some a mixture) magma chambers, metamorphic processes, evolution of ore deposits. Some restrictions on projects IF you have taken 3600 BUT ores related options available for all The module involves some practical work to generate your own data. Good experience of research Good for the c.v.

It is your responsibility to ensure that your module enrolment is correct, not the School’s. The Semester split should 60/60 or 50/70 at most.

Exams information There are rules governing progression to year 3. You need to gain 100 credits to progress (honours). PFP modules (Pass For Progression) vary between courses: for GS and EG these are the core modules. Students with Special Circumstances that have affected their studies must notify Katrina Firth in the School Office ASAP and not later than 13 June An will be sent to all students in the next few days confirming information relating to examinations, publishing of marks, and resit & progression procedures.

Year 3 field course dates and venues These are within the Easter Vacation: March 17 to April 16 Dates TBA: DO NOT BOOK A HOLIDAY DURING THIS TIME You must choose ONE of the following field courses: SOEE3040/2 and SOEE5605/10 Cyprus Ophiolite, copper mineralisation, carbonates. Limited to 45 places; first-come, first-served sign-up. Provisional dates: Sat 2 nd April to Weds 13 th April. SOEE3560 and SOEE5615 North Yorkshire (Scarborough) Compulsory for Petroleum Track. Limited places; first-come, first-served sign-up. Provisional dates: Easter 2011 (TBC). SOEE 3660 Northern Ireland (TBC). Further details to follow later this academic year. The cost of your first trip will be subsidised by approx £300..If you choose the Cyprus trip the cost will be approx £300,(TBC) plus food Cost of Yorkshire Coast and Northern Ireland TBC- but MUCH cheaper.
