Study the Statue What is the first thing you notice about this statue? What do you think it symbolizes? How does it make you feel?

The first thing that I noticed were the scales in her right hand. I think that this statue symbolizes justice and its process. This statue makes me feel that the process of justice is more complex than people really think.

Background This is the Lady Justice Statue, some common names are the Scales of Justice or Blind Justice. She was the Greek goddess of Justice or the order of the natural world. That just means she ordered and organized things like the seasons and planned the path of a person’s life from beginning to end. I believe the intended audience is for all the people that believe in justice. Not only lawyers, judges, juries, and criminals, but for all of man kind. Audience

Appeal This has an logical appeal. It has this because it makes you think about our justice system and how it works. This is important because it shows that there is more to justice than what meets the eye. This also has ethical appeal. It has this because it has an effect on a persons ethics. This is important because it makes you think about all the components that go into making a decision whether it is about justice or anything else in life.

Intention I believe that the intention of this statue is to show people that justice is not as simple as they might think. Since the time of the Greeks justice has been very important. That multiple aspects go into deciding whether a person is guilty or not. It also shows how at the time it was made justice was much simpler. Now people have to wonder if the judge has been corrupted or something else like that.

Composition Color: This statue uses one color but in multiple shades. The entire statue is bronze but her skin is a lighter shade while her dress and platform is a darker shade. This enhances her meaning of being pure and not corrupt.

Composition Cont. Proportion: The statue is mostly equally proportioned except for the scales. The scales are not correctly proportion in comparison with the rest of the statue. This enhances the effect that the scales or how she weighs both sides is more important than the other components.

Techniques This statue is a symbol of justice. Not only can you infer this from its name but also from the components that makeup this statue. All of the components are the symbols of the process to justice.

Techniques Cont. The sword in her left hand represents her authority. The scales in her right hand represents how carefully each claim is weighed. The blindfold represents that she is impartial to either side and has no preset decision about the case.
