Advanced Placement: A Partnership with Colleges & Universities

The AP Strategic Initiative: Partnership + West Virginia Department of Education + West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission + West Virginia State Board of Education + West Virginia Center for Professional Development + West Virginia AP Leadership Committee + West Virginia Office of Education and the Arts + The College Board

WV Advanced Placement + West Virginia ranks 46th in the nation in AP student achievement, with just 9.6% of West Virginia students earning a score of 3+ on an AP Exam before leaving high school.

West Virginia AP Goals Rationale: Currently, West Virginia ranks 46 th in the nation in AP student achievement, with just 9.4% of West Virginia students earning a score of 3+ on an AP Exam before leaving high school. + The Goals: -Increase AP participation to at least 45% of the 2018 graduating cohort class -Increase AP performance to 25% of the 2018 graduating cohort class -Close participation and performance gaps for African-American students by 2018

Debunking Myths 1. Myth:AP is for students who always get good grades 2. Myth: AP courses are too stressful 3. Myth: AP courses are only for students planning to attend college 4. Myth: It’s all about the score

Access to AP - Common Barriers: + Lack of awareness + Lack of preparation/support (student, teacher) + Restrictive policies - Entrance Criteria - Exit Criteria + Students with potential not identified + Insufficient motivation/incentive
