How the Spirit works through us...

The Spirit helps us when we are in difficult situations and need to share the truth of the Gospel. Mark 13:11 “Whenever you are arrested and brought to trial, do not worry beforehand about what to say. Just say whatever is given you at the time, for it is not you speaking, but the Holy Spirit.” Luke 12:12 “...for the Holy Spirit will teach you at that time what you should say.”

The Spirit teaches and reminds us of what we need to know and remember. He is our comforter, advisor, and our strength. Psalm 143:10 “Teach me to do your will, for you are my God; may your good Spirit lead me on level ground.” Acts 19:31 “Then the church throughout Judea, Galilee and Samaria enjoyed a time of peace and was strengthened. Living in the fear of the Lord and encouraged by the Holy Spirit, it increased in numbers.”

The Spirit teaches and reminds us of what we need to know and remember. He is our comforter, advisor, and our strength. 1 Corinthians 2:9-10 “However, as it is written: ‘What no eye has seen, what no ear has heard, and what no human mind has conceived’— the things God has prepared for those who love him—these are the things God has revealed to us by his Spirit. The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God.”

The Spirit draws believers closer to Jesus. Ephesians 3:16-19 “I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the Lord’s holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.”

The Holy Spirit helps us to overcome our own sinful desires. This is a lifelong process which we cannot accomplish on our own. Romans 8:2 “...because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death.”

Through the Holy Spirit we are adopted as children. Because of this we can have an intimate relationship with God our Father, instead of a relationship based on fear and slavery. Romans 8:15-16 “The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship. And by him we cry, ‘Abba, Father.’ The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children.”

The Spirit convicts people of sin. Both before and after we are in Christ. John 16:7-11 “But very truly I tell you, it is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. When he comes, he will prove the world to be in the wrong about sin and righteousness and judgment: about sin, because people do not believe in me; about righteousness, because I am going to the Father, where you can see me no longer; and about judgment, because the prince of this world now stands condemned.” 1 Thessalonians 1:5 “because our gospel came to you not simply with words but also with power, with the Holy Spirit and deep conviction. You know how we lived among you for your sake.

The Spirit brings us life and freedom. Romans 8:10-11 “But if Christ is in you, then even though your body is subject to death because of sin, the Spirit gives life because of righteousness. And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies because of his Spirit who lives in you.” 2 Corinthians 3:17 “Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.”

The Spirit fills us with hope, joy, and peace. Because God is a God of hope. Romans 15:13 “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.”

Everyone in Christ is given something, an ability, a talent, a message, something that shows or proves that the Spirit is in us. 1 Corinthians 12:7 “Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good.”

Those who are led by the Spirit are characterized by certain attitudes and actions. Galatians 5:22-23 “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.” 2 Corinthians 3:18 “And we all, who with unveiled faces contemplate the Lord’s glory, are being transformed into his image with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.”

The Holy Spirit helps us when we don’t even know what kind of help to ask for. Romans 8:26-27 “In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans. And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for God’s people in accordance with the will of God.”
