School District U-46 Elementary Language Arts Literacy Framework Survey Results Created and distributed by the District Teacher Leader Curriculum Liaisons Barb Bettis and Lisa Whitmer November, 2010

Background In April, 2010, the U-46 Elementary Literacy Framework and its materials were presented to the Instructional Council. The Literacy Framework time frame itself was presented as Informational Only. The Literacy Framework materials were presented and approved. Instructional Supplemental Materials for grades K-6 for Word Analysis were approved by the U-46 Board of Education on May 3, 2010 Professional Development for the Literacy Framework and its resources began in May, 2010, continued through the summer and fall, and continues as needed.

Rationale In August, as teacher curriculum liaisons, we began receiving teacher feedback in regards to the Literacy Framework, its resources, professional development and its expectations. As the year continued, the input from teachers did as well. The majority of the feedback dealt with professional development, text-level assessments, framework implementation, and communication. In order to capture and reflect the input of the teachers across the District, the Literacy Framework Survey was created. The sections surveyed reflect the feedback received. As liaisons, we worked with elementary teachers to craft appropriate questions in order to represent teacher input as accurately as possible.

The survey results reflect feedback from elementary teachers only. The survey was distributed to teachers via district on November 1, 2010, and the survey closed on November 24, A total of 318 teachers responded. According to Dr. Rodriguez and Dr. Ali, the district has approximately 850 elementary teachers for the 2010 school year. Therefore, the survey reflects approximately thirty-seven percent of elementary teachers. The questions pertain to classroom teachers who were specifically trained on and are implementing and working within the Literacy Framework.

Intent As teacher curriculum liaisons, we provide the resource to gather overall data reflecting teacher feedback. The liaison position represents teacher voice for curriculum initiatives made in the District. The Elementary Literacy Framework Survey represents this charge. It is our intent that this data- as well as other measurements- is used in all curriculum venues in order to make informed decisions regarding the Elementary Literacy Framework.
