Writer’s Notebooks Preserving Ideas for Future Writings

Notebook Elements A writer’s notebook gives one a place to write down their thoughts, ideas, opinions, feelings, and etc. A writer’s notebook is not limited to print. It may include sketches, pictures, diagrams, photos and other visual reminders.

Uses of a Writer’s Notebook List ideas Record experiences Plot ideas List questions Illustrations and sketches Writing experiments Record favorite quotes, poems, and etc. Create webs of topics or concepts List favorite items Record character descriptions

How to introduce Writer’s Notebooks. Introduce by showing students the importance of notebooks to writers and how writers use them. One way is to create and share your own notebook with your students. Discuss with students the kinds of writing they will be doing. Create a list with students of the uses or ideas for writer’s notebooks.

Literature Connection Children’s literature can be used as a basis for some notebook entries. As different literary works are introduced and read over the course of the school term, students can record words, phrases, and etc that they may want to remember for inspiration, future writing topics, and etc.
