INTRODUCTORY MICROSOFT WORD Lesson 4 – Formatting Text

Objectives Apply different fonts and font styles to text. Change the size and color of text. Use different underline styles and font effects. Highlight text. Change the case of text. Copy formats using the Format Painter.

Changing the Font To apply a new font, choose Font on the Format menu to display the Font dialog box or use the Font box on the Formatting toolbar. See Figure 4-4 in student book, Font dialog box See Figure 4-5 in student book, Font list box

Font Style Font Style – set of formatting features that can be applied to text to change its appearance. Most common font styles: Bold – Underline Italic To change the font style, click the buttons on the Formatting toolbar.

Font Size Font Size – determined by measuring the height of characters in units called points. To change font size, choose Font on the Format menu or use the Font Size box on the Formatting toolbar.

See Figure 4-8 in student book, Font Color To change the color of text, select the text and choose Font on the Format menu, then click the down arrow next to the Font color box. You can also click the arrow on the Font Color button on the Formatting toolbar. Choose a color from the palette. See Figure 4-8 in student book, Font Color palette

Changing Underline Style and Color To choose an underline style, click the down arrow on the Underline style box and select a style from the drop-down list. To choose an underline color, click the down arrow on the Underline color box and select a color from the palette. See Table 4-2 in student book, Underline styles

Highlighting Highlighting – emphasizes text with color. Select the text and click the down arrow on the Highlight button on the Formatting toolbar. See Figure 4-9 in student book, Highlight color palette

Copying Format and Style Format Painter – copies the format and style of a block of text. Select the formatted text to be copied. Click the Format Painter button, then select the text you want to format.

Summary Common font styles are bold, italic, and underline. Font size is measured in points. Color of text, style of underline, color of underline, and font effects can be changed in the Font dialog box.

Summary The case of selected text can be changed in the Change Case dialog box. Format Painter copies the format and style of text.
